Pakistan interfering in the internal affairs of India | Nationalist Attack on Mirwaiz | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 26: The yesterday's Chandigarh well-organized attack on APHC (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other Kashmiri separatists have evoked sharp reaction in Kashmir Valley, as also in Pakistan. In Kashmir, almost all the "mainstream" and separatist outfits have condemned the incident as an attack on the freedom to speech. Some of them have described the Chandigarh incident as a handiwork of "communal forces", "paid agents", "fringe elements", "intelligence agencies" and "deep-rooted conspiracy being hatched by secret agencies." It's all non-sense. It was the feat performed by nationalists and ardent believers in the idea of India. It was not the handiwork of agencies. As a matter of fact, the agencies, the police and the authorities had acted otherwise. They did not book the Mirwaiz and his handful of supporters. They took into custody those who took cudgels with separatists braving all odds to produce a moral effect. Their fulminations are understandable, as the nationalist response to the anti-India activities being carried on outside Kashmir is as it should be. And, there are reasons to believe that what started with an attack on Syed Ali Shah Geelani and other separatists, including Maoist separatists, Naxals and Khalistanis, on October 21 this year at New Delhi has become a movement and that the separatists would continue to face the nationalist ire in case they or their Maoist and Naxal supporters again dare to organize similar anti-India activities outside the Kashmir Valley. So, the Chandigarh attack on the Mirwaiz has to be viewed in this context. No body is going to tolerate any non-sense in the rest of the country. This was the message from New Delhi. This was the message from Kolkata, where Gilani, who was accused in the December 13, 2001 parliament attack, was heckled and made to leave the place where he was addressing an anti-India meeting. This was the message from Jammu, where DFP chief Shabbir Shah was attacked, hackled and jeered and made to leave the place in a huff. And, this was also the message from Chandigarh. Earlier, Jammu had seen similar nationalist response a number of times. Take, for example, the failure of Geelani to address anti-India meting in the Talab Khatikan area. The Kashmiri separatists would do well to desist from extending their tentacles outside the Valley, stop such activities within the Valley itself and no do anything that offend the nationalist sentiment. This would be in their interest. Not to do so or to continue to preach secessionism, based on religion, would be only to invite more trouble. The nationalist patience has come to an end. There should be no doubt it. This is one side of the story the moral of which is that the Indians are not going to swallow any longer what the Kashmiri separatists believe in and preach. The other side of the story is the Pakistani interference in the internal affairs of India. It has no right to comment on the developments as unfolding in different parts of the country. What happened at Chandigarh was the internal issue of India and it was signal to Islamabad as well that it has no other option but to behave and take care of Pakistan that is on the verge of collapse and that has been witnessing civil war-like situation. It needs to be noted that Islamabad has condemned the Chandigarh incident. Reacting to the nationalist attack on Mirwaiz and other separatists, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman, Abdul Basit, has described the incident as a manifestation of "frustration of communal organizations" and asserted that "Kashmiris are engaged in a peaceful political struggle for right to self-determination." Not only Abdul Basit, the Pakistani Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira, has also condemned the "assault" and said that the "act was undemocratic and uncalled for" and that "the Kashmiris' movement is a purely peaceful and non-violent struggle, but India is, unfortunately, hell bent on pushing this peaceful political movement towards violence." What Basit and Kaira have said is nothing but a blatant interference in the internal affairs of India and this just cannot be tolerated. It is hoped that the Indian Foreign Office would take on the Pakistani Foreign Office and ask it not to poke its dirty nose in the internal affairs of India. It is also hoped that our foreign policy managers and those dealing with Kashmir and Pakistan would ask Islamabad to vacate aggression in PoK and Gilgit-Baltistan before they talk about right to self-determination. Pakistan needs to be shown its place and exposed. Besides, the authorities in New Delhi should see to it that no Kashmiri separatist is able to air anti-India views anywhere in the country, including Kashmir, and make it loud and clear that right to speech cannot be misused to preach communalism and secessionism. |
