Reminiscences of Dogra rule over ancient kashmir
NC Kotwal Advocate11/27/2010 7:54:36 PM

“Humanity is the greatest religion, dearest to the God”.
(Theodore Parker)
The Holy Koran says:- Oh mankind,
we have created you male and female, and appointed you races and tribes, that you may know one another, and not hate one another. Surely the noblest among you in the sight of God is the most God fearing amongst you. God is all knowing all aware".
(Sura 49 verse 10 - 15)
My humble suggestion to those bewildered champions of Kashmir polity as well as Islam in Kashmir, How can they are permitted to lost sight of above dictate of the God through Holy Koran, who's every act and effort is dividing people, in the name of religion as well as region and instead of love are in habit of nurturing and preaching hatred among the mankind, that too in the name of religion and God to achieve wealth, worldly pleasures, power and petty political gains at the cost of human devastation. This is quite in perversion of what has been desired above. They forget that by such ungodly acts, they are not only trick-ring themselves but unfortunately they trick-ring both the God as well the religion, for which they await "Chastisement only sooner or later"
The 1st Dogra Rule over portion of Kashmir Valley
What such champions of Kashmir, have forgotten and the nation do not know, must peep through the early eras of history and events of ancient and pre-historic periods. Who brought the initial habitation in the bowled valley which was at that time a frozen ice ball?
If we probe and ponder with intellectual honesty as well as political and historical sincerity very few people know, that Dogras of Jammu region have superior, territorial and political right over the Kashmir valley for the following reasons:-
(i) The habitation to frozen valley, after getting the ice melted on upper reaches being used for grazing as pastures was made possible by a Dogra Brahmin namely "Darya Deva" from Surankot area of Poonch District in Jammu region in ancient times with the meditation and blessings of Neel Naga, and preaching and spreading the Naga Cult and Naga worship, which was a precondition laid down by Neel Naga, when the former i.e. Darya Deva appeared before Neel Naga in Verinag spring by a coincident, as depicted in Neela Matta Purana, for making this land worth habitation of mankind. Then his son and Successor namely Chander Deva was the 1st ruler of that portion of Kashmir which appeared above the water of Sati Sara Lake.
The Historian relate this period to "Treta Yuga", three generation before Lord Rama, perhaps this was period when this country was ruled by Great Grand Father of Surya Vanshi Lord Rama, namely Raja "Aajj" father of Maharaja Dushratha.
The famous Muslim Historian, Mohd-ul-Din "Foke" the author of his Urdu book "Detailed History of Kashmir" 1st Volume (Hindu period) has clearly and elaborately described in his above book page 12 to 30 that these rulers have been mentioned in Hindu Scriptures at page 18 - 19, that later hahitation brought by Rishi Kashyapa by inviting eleven Brahmin families from Gujarat and Poonch has nothing to do or has any link with this race because the visit of Kashyapa Rishi to Sati Sara was in "Dwapar Yuga". As per his version that ancient race of powerful rulers, mentioned by the names Darya Deva, Chander Deva, Bhootandan, Vishay Nandan, Vishwa Magas, Partap Bholu in sacred books like Bhrijha Katha, by Rishi Birigoo Neela Mata Purana and Puranic episodes, had vanished completely in the universal devastation caused “Pralaya”. At page 30 of his book, he makes mention of this universal devastation that due to powerful and high intensity earth quacks had caused the entire world shattered in which 2/3rd population of world got vanished in this natural calamity and human devastation. While in plaints of Punjab entire land came under water from Ravi to Chenab i.e. entire Jammu region including Punjab plain and the Kashmir Valley took shape of lake called "Sati Sara", which became later on the disporting abode of Lord Shiva and his spouse Sati and took the name of “Sati Sara”. The worthy Author describes happenings of this event of biggest tragedy in the year of 3889 B.C. Briefly this Habitation and rule of 1st Dogra Dynasty over the region of Kashmir, came to an end by this universal devastation about 5000 years back. At page 30 he writes that during Rama's rule in India, Kashmir was invaded by Lord Rama which can be proved that during the excavation during the regime of Lalita Dittya, in 750 A.D. the temple constructed by Lord Rama and Hanuman appeared from excavation site at Lacchi Pura Baramulla.
2nd phase of Dogra Rule
Then came the period of Kashyap Rishi the great grand son of Lord Brahma when he happened to pass through Poonch Rajouri on a pilgrimage to Sati Sara (Kashmir). When the Dogra people of this region heard about his stay at a place known as Boneer /Bathera, in Rajouri. The people made their woes of their hardships and agonies being inflicted by a Jaldeva Dwellings in Sati Sara Lake by the name of Jalambhava, to this ascetic, in a Hermit robes. Rishi Kashyapa assured them to get rid of this Jalambhava in which he succeeded and water was got drained out, near Baramulla and dry earth appeared. He brought habitation by inviting 11 families from neighboring Poonch and Surankot areas and valley got 2nd phase of Dogra Rule on Kashmir Valley, which lasted for considerable period. Since the land which appeared from below the water was fertile enough and the bowelled valley got natural beauty surrounded by hills, mountains as well as spurs with lush green vegetation and thick forest greenery, very swiftly in short span of period which became a source of attraction for many tribes who migrated to this beautiful valley, where nature has blessed every bounty of human need in abundance. It was obvious, that when people of varied faiths, tribes and regions settled in Kashmir Valley, the political as well as social strife and clash of interests for power and supremacy was inevitable and natural. Centuries after, the population from Dogra heritage, who were aborigines also were fed up from the anarchy brought down by these other fighting tribes, who not only belonged to plains of Punjab, but some warlike fighting people in shape of raiders had crossed to settle here across Himalaya; mostly from Turkistan and Baltistan and some areas from Tibet to Ladakh, as well as Afghanistan.
So they decided to go to Jammu City the capital of Jammu Region which was got recently built by Dogra Ruler Jambu Lochan a descendent from Suryavanshi Raja Lord Ram Chandra, and where there was flourishing a well established regime based. on Justice and Rule of Law, as well as equity and peace. At that time Raja Puran Karan the elder son of Jambu Lochan was on the throne of Jammu ruling the entire Kingdom from Punjab in south west to North east boundaries of Pirpanjal and SubHimalayan regions, in the Jammu region.
These group of eminent people sought audience of the Raja in Jammu Darbar and prayed unanimously that the powerful Raja, as he was, should invade and raid the valley of Kashmir to bring back, normalcy and rule of Law which stand shattered due to rebellion of warring tribes. So the king Puran Karan the Ruler of Jammu was moved, hearing the awful tales of tyranny and unrest let loose by these rowdy tribes in Kashmir and decided to invade and conquer the valley to suppress the anarchy and chastisement of rebels.
3rd Phase of Dogra Rule over Kashmir.
So Raja Puran Karan of Jammu who had two brave sons, namely Daya Karan and Dharam Karan, dispatched a contingent of brave Dogra Army, under the command of his elder son "Daya Karan”. Daya Karan suppressed the rebellion caused by the heads and leader of these Primitive Tribes and brought peace and rule of law in Kashmir Valley for the 3rd time in the end of Dawapar Yuga, and beginning of Kalyuga, when another destruction of the country of Hindustan was destined and simmering up which exploded in the shape of great “Mahabharata War” as is known in historical annals.
The Author of “History of Kashmir” Part IInd, Mr. Mohamud-ul-Din. Foke describe this period briefly at page 33 of his book with a caption “Hukumat-e-raigan Jammu (55 years)”.
He writes that with the command of his father, Puran Karan the Maharaja of Jammu, his eldest son Daya Karan, in the year, 3180 B.C., at the head of a strong contingent of Dogra Army, attacked the valley of Kashmir, and put an end to Tribal supremacy suppressing the arrogant heads of tribes and brought the valley under the subjugation of Jammu (Dogra) Rule. Though there is no much detailed information pertaining to this period, but it is very clear that in the third generation of Raja Daya Karan, his grandson by the name Som Dutt became the powerful Ruler of Dogra Dynasty. During this period, the war of Mahabharata was in its full swing and this Raja Som Dutt along with 60,000 troops participated in the war and fought the war on behalf of “Kurwas” against Lord Krishna at Thansesar. He constantly fought for 18 days with bravery and skill, out at the end of war in the year 3125 B.C. he along with his 60,000 soldiers got killed by Lord Krishna near Mathura.
Having no male heir, the rule of this Jamwal Dynasty came to an end and anarchy and disorder again prevailed in the valley. Though later on the valley experienced many changes when it was invaded by powerful kings from Central India from various dynasties but after Som Dutt a local powerful tribe known as “Aawkund” ruled the valley for 17 years up to 3104 B.C. having its last Ruler from the line of Damodar Aawkund as Dayal Goond who was murdered by one Haran Dev from the dynasty of Pandvas who ruled the valley one after an other for one thousand years having the last Ruler as Nidar Sein and Sunder Sein when the valley passed - 16 the Malva King.
4th Dogra Rule
The fourth phase of Dogra Rule emerged in June 1819, when Maharaja Gulab Singh defeated the last Afghan Ruler Azim Khan killing in this battle his brother Jabbar Khan, at the head of Khalsa Army sent by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to assist Raja Gulab Singh.
Finally the valley came under the Dogra Rule, by famous treaty of 1846 known as “Amritsar Treaty”, which was drawn and executed between Maharaja Gulab Singh of Jammu and "Saltanat-e-Englishiya" (English Empire) on 16 March 1846 represented and signed by Governor General Lord H. Harding and H.M. Lawrence.
This is history that Jammuties gained the ruler ship of Kashmir and are known as real protector, as well as aborigines of Bowelled valley from the time immemorial who not only brought habitation to this bowelled valley, but had contributed to its dignity welfare, development and security from outside aggression and fullest prosperity of mankind. Even Dogras have sacrificed their precious lives always for bringing fortune and dignity to the people of valley.
How can these handful political groups of Muslim politicians of valley overshadow the historical facts and history and hoodwink not only the entire nation, but mis-representing the whole world spreading and cultivating communalism and religious hatred.
How they claim champions of Kashmir and on what ground they are permitted to continue their nefarious designs and acts which results and culminates only in destruction of the valley and deprivation of common lot of people from natural process of development as well as their human, legal and social rights.
How and why these handful miscreants, the champions of rioting, looting and destruction of all kind, are made heroes by the Central Government and so called Kashmir Centric Politicians, to decide the future of the State of Jammu & Kashmir to the utter disregard to the large population of not only the Jammu Region and Ladakh, but also the right thinking community in a large number from valley itself.
Why justice and Rule of Law has been kept hostage to these few dozen mischief mongers in the valley and injustice openly is being done to Jammuties in general and peace loving people of Poonch, Rajouri and Doda Districts who's development is being hampered & harmed to sweet will of these fanatic agents of the enemy.
My simple question to these champions of destruction, rioting, looting and creating all kind of lawlessness against the humanity is, are these acts and sinister designs a mode for acquiring illicit wealth and political supremacy and is it not earning worst kind of notoriety to the name of Kashmir Society to which they belong? By their wonton and ignoble acts they want to confirm that they are off springs, of treacherous Renehan Shah, who brought Islam to valley by highest degree of betrayal and treachery as 1st Sultan with the name of Sultan Sadar-ud-Din in history of Kashmir and after him, his follower Shah Mirza, of Sawat, who became 2nd Sultan in Muslim Rule of Kashmir, who's decedent Sikander the Butt Shiken is known for atrocities and cruelties to mankind. These Geelani's, Mufti's and Sheikhs do want to manifest that unholy blood of these treacherous deceptive is running in their veins. It can not be ruled out that few of these Geelani's and Mufti's may be progenies of Yousuf Chak, Assad Khan the Tyrants of Kashmir.
It is for these champions to ponder and interact whether or not they are members of a civilized pragmatic and moral society or they are the persons who arc responsible for bringing bad repute and notoriety of being immoral, primitive and dogmatic to this particular society. It needs volumes to depict the voices of such anti human forces that have brought globally the bad name to Kashmir and Kashmiri's as a whole, but suffice to say that I will only pen don from different sources and from renowned Historians and Writers of world fame. What the world have the view and concept of these Kashmir's and Kashmir, because of the acts of these few hundred champions and self styled leaders of Kashmir polity, who have always, by their blackmail tactics and opportunism have planted deception, falseness and corruption and betrayal and identity of this region. Having no personal views for this sad state of affairs, I will prefer to pen down the global views which throw light on such type of culture in their memories and travel accounts from time to time.
(i) The eminent writer, intellectual and Indian Parliamentarian Mr. M.J. Akbar, in his recent book titled "The Kashmir Behind the Vale" (Chapter 5 Page-- 31) writes about the social character of a Kashmiri derived from “Aiyeen-e-Akbari”:-
“Agar Qahat-ur rijal uftad;
Az an She mihr Kamjui;
Awwal Kumbu, Dujjan Afghan,
Siyum badzat Kashmiri;
The Kumbu Hila me ayad,
The Afghan Kina me ayad,
Zeh Kashmiri na me ayad bajuz, and huh Wa Dilgiri.
Try to get some thing out of you rather than giving you something.
(ii) Dr. Arthur Neve, who was among the 1st foreigners who entered Kashmir and worked as a missionary there for years and also was supposed to be a great well wisher of people of valley, whom he served through his mission Hospital, describe Kashmiris in his famous book "Picturesque Kashmir" published in 1900 in these words:-
“They are Treacherous as the Pathan without his velour;
More false than Bengali, but equally intelligent;
They are cringing when in subjugation,
They are impudent, when free".
(iii) The eminent European Traveler, Sir Charles Elison Bates, in his book, "A Gazetteer of Kashmir" has frankly and clearly pointed out towards the views of some Kashmir Society (Page, 36) of his above book, he writes:
“Hugel likewise describe as Venal, dishonest and dreadfully addicted to sexual immorality”
Another Verse says "that when the Kashmiri will be weighed and his virtues will be found wanting he will whine out a prayer to God to change the scales".
He further writes that these proverbs are in every mouth “Many fowls in house will defile it and many Kashmiris in a country will spoil it”, then again he writes if you meet a snake do not put it to death, but do not spare a Kashmiri and also do not admit a Kashmiri to your friendship or you will hang a hatchet over your door way.
Similarly at page 273 of his book the Author of “Valley of Kashmir”, Walter R. Lawrence, ICS, C.LE, who remained settlement Commissioner of J&K State, in Maharaja Ranbir Singh's period of Rule, in 1889, describes about the image and picture of Kashmiri being globally despised of for their foul conduct and they are noted for their cunning and dishonest in which the inherent instinct of ingratitude, betrayal and dec ption is almost present with some exceptions of some Rural Tribes, who are very simple and hospitable contrary to Urban Folk, mostly politically, involved and awakened. At page 273-80 of his book, he writes that there is a general view about Kashmiri that the proverb linked to them describes as "There is foul in their character and fraud in their conduct".
Here too he has attributed these views particularly to city people (Sheharbaash) and has drawn distinction in Rural people and some respectful sects of Muslim Society like "Rishis" who are admired by all and loved by each.
The recent and latest disposition, made by two eminent Writers Mr B.K. Mulik and Shri Jagmohan directly attack unambiguously beyond other voices of Kashmiri Political Muslim class following the same lines, and communal hatred and biased against Hindus and Buddhists of J&K State to which Sheikh Abdullah brought spurt in the stir of communal frenzy against non Muslims of Kashmir in 1931 as Chairman of Muslim Conference.
Shri Jagmohan has beautifully sketched the ill quest of Kashmiri politicians in following lines. In his celebrated book the "Frozen Turbulence" the eminent intellectual writes:-
“Demand of Separation, Autonomy or Article 370 is nothing but a “feeding ground for the Parasites” at the heart of Paradise. It skins the poor, it deceives them with its mirage, it lines the pockets of power elites and it fans the ego of new Sultans, it breeds microbes of deception and subversions. It suffocates the very idea of India besides it keeps alive the unwholesome legacy of two nation theory, which even Sheikh Abdullah cannot separate and called it political idealism. It emanates from the clever strategy to stay away from the mainstream to set up a separate fiefdom.
This strategy of communal separation in bowelled valley has been misused by political elite of the valley for building their empires. It militates against the very concept of one India and is a nutrient for communal bias against non Muslims of the Jammu & Kashmir State.
Mr. B.N. Mulik at page 33 of his famous book "Kashmir, my years with Nehru", has truthfully brought out the inner proclivity and communal tendency of Sheikh Mohd Abdullah against non Muslims of Kashmir. His utter hatred for Dogras in general and Hindus in particular. He never liked the Muslims of Poonch and Rajouri being decedents of Dogras, even when he was heading Muslim Conference in 1931 when Chaudhary Abbass, Master Allah Rakha from Rajouri Poonch were his colleagues and Mentors. They were alienated and put in jail only to fulfill his dream of becoming undisputed Sultan, perpetually of Muslim majority Kashmir. This ideology of Muslim Conference has not changed, though under compulsions, Muslim Conference was changed to National Conference but the mindset and the goal of creating Muslim Empire in Kashmir, and oath taken on 13 July 1931 at Idgah Graveyard by Abdullah and his supporters to achieve this demonical goal remain unchanged till day. This is why his heir and successors are reviewing the same battle which Sheikh Mohd Abdullah fought right from 1931 but got miserably defeated in the long run.
The Author writes, Sheikh Abdullah compared "Dogras" with wild animals. He writes:-
Sheikh Abdullah softened a little and refrained from making any remarks against me personally, but I could not persuade him from indulging in his theme of hatred against the Dogras and giving expressions to his great contempt for them.
He himself would have probably liked the entire Dogra Community to migrate to India and make over their lands to persons of his choice (from other side of L.O.C which later on was attempted and made manifest by passing the controversial Resettlement Bill of J&K Assembly).
What good or virtues could be expected from that young generation of Kashmir Society whose ancestors have crossed all ethical, moral and social limits in degrading to such a low level only to fulfill their unholistic lust of power, wealth and superstilious fame?
The present scenario of Kashmir is same “as you sow so shall you reap”. If they become stone peltors, rioters and communal hazardous, what wrong they are doing. They have been preached and lessoned so, right from 1931.
I have provided lot of material m the preceding chapter, which could be a food for thought for the enlightened and right thinking Kashmiris. Kindly debate, open a debate for not only the betterment of Kashmir and Kashmiri youth, but all the citizens and constituents of Jammu and Kashmir State, like Ladakh, Kargil, Poonch, Rajouri and Doda.
With these words, I want to conclude this chapter, which I could not brought out to my choice, as the Author suddenly developed some ailment of Liver and had to get admitted in Ahcarya Shri Chandra Hospital Sidhra where operation of the Author is pending this being reason. I am unable to finish the job to my taste.
In case life survives, I will be again before my readers with new work and new ideas.
I would simply pray to these Kashmiri Leaders, to desist from spoiling and marring the life and career of your children. Be humane and preach humanity which is only dearer to the God in whom you pretend to repose belief.
“Too Idhar Udhar Ki Na Baat Kar;
Yeh Bata Ki Kafila Kyun Loota;
Hamein Rah-e-Zan se Garz Nahi,
Teri Rehbari Ka Sawal Hai".
