| SVO detects frauds in appointments, purchases at LAWWDA | | | Srinagar, November 4 : The State Vigilance Organisation has detected frauds in appointment of daily wagers and purchase of cement pipes in Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWWDA). According to the sources, the authorities had appointed 78 daily wagers during last few years in LAWWDA's Mechanical Division, despite State Government having imposed a blanket ban on engagement of daily wagers in the state. The engineering wing of LAWWDA, according to the sources, purchased cement pipes and manhole covers valuing crores of rupees through a local contractor from a non local concern. The sewerage can't pass through pipes purchased by mechanical division of LAWWDA and kickbacks of lakhs of rupees are alleged to have been received by concerned officials, sources added. It has been also learnt that LAWWDA has also purchased two harvesters namely K.K.Nigeen and Bed Aeration valuing Rs 84 lakhs in open market for cleaning Dal Lake. More over an additional amount of Rs40 lakhs were spent on two engines of the harvesters already purchased by LAWWDA. The authorities have allegedly received kickbacks of lakhs of rupees in making these purchases from a non local concern, the brand name of which is "Mumbai Outes". The LAWWDA has not, according to sources, floating any tenders for the purchases valuing Rs1.50 crores from a Mumbai based concern, but contract has been allotted to the company in violation of standing rules of LAWWDA. Similarly the sewerage system designed through a non local concern "IRAM" has also turned defunct. Consequently the Dal Lak has got squeezed to 3 kilometers during last three years and the onus of responsibility, according to sources, lies on engineers of mechanical division LAWWDA who in connivance with their high ups made a wasteful expenditure that runs into crores and crores of rupees. The Government, according to sources, has asked State Vigilance Organisation to start full scale investigation of the misappropriation of public funds made in purchasing substandard equipment during last three years. The arrests of some top officials are not ruled out by sources in State Vigilance Organisation. Interestingly State High Court has already put LAWWDA under scanner.
