EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 27: If the Congress leadership in J&K has any self-respect, it must sever all ties with the NC forthwith and create an environment that leads to fresh elections in the state. This is the only course left for the Congress to prove that it will not allow the ungrateful NC to despise and ridicule the Congress party any longer. Its association with the NC even for a moment now would establish that the JKPCC leadership has no self-respect and that it is so weak that it has no other option left but to support the NC-led government even if NC leaders abuse, ridicule and publicly target New Delhi.
Why should the Congress come out of the NC-led government? In the people’s interest. Also because the Chief Minister’s uncle and former Minister has crossed all the lines, condemned New Delhi and challenged the very Congress party. Take, for, example what he said yesterday at Srinagar to paint New Delhi and the Congress party black. He, among other things, said: “The Delhi-appointed interlocutors are strangers and we would not talk to them…Congress could not win more than three seats and was relishing power because of National Conference…1975 accord was an incomplete exercise…If Congress was not happy with NC, they can part ways…Let me make it clear to the Congress that NC came into existence in 1930s and Congress was born in 1964. Congress is enjoying power because of NC…Congress bagged only three seats in Kashmir out of 47 in 2008 assembly polls... Congress was the party that triggered land row in 2008 which led to the death of 70 people…
NC has been receiving wounds since 1947...Congress has to change its approach. They are using same old tactics…If Congress is not happy with the NC, they can leave us.”
Is the uncle of the Chief right? No, he is not. He says the Congress is enjoying power only because of the NC’s generosity. It is not true. The fact is that the NC got power in October 1947 on a platter because of Jawaharlal Nehru. Again, it got political power in 1975 on a platter because of Indira Gandhi. Similarly, Omar Abdullah would have been in bewilderment had not the Congress high command handed over the power to him on a platter in January 2009. The Chief Minister’s uncle is as ungrateful as the former is, who has always taken the Congress party for a ride and taken several decisions unilaterally, thus providing opportunities to the BJP and the JKNPP to beat the Congress mercilessly from right and left. The Congress has become an object of contempt and ridicule. Courtesy: The NC and the CM.
The Chief Minister’s uncle says that the “1975 accord was an incomplete exercise.” He is absolutely wrong. The fact is that his father came back to power after a long gap of 22 years only because of the 1975 accord, which was reached much against the wishes of the local Congressmen. Actually, it was his father who bartered his ideology for the sake of personal power and profit. That he abandoned his plebiscite/greater autonomy plank for the sake of power could be seen from the fact that he allowed New Delhi to extend more Central laws to the state.
It is hardly necessary to reflect on his views on the New Delhi-appointed interlocutors. His nephew and Chief Minister has on a number of occasions eulogized these controversial interlocutors and asserted that their appointment would go a long way in redressing the grievances of the people of Kashmir and resolving the so-called Kashmir issue. It is also known that a number of NC leaders have already met these interlocutors and presented their viewpoint on Kashmir issue.
It appears the Chief Minister’s uncle has lost his way. It can also be said that he is feeling frustrated because his nephew has not inducted him in his council of ministers. It is out of frustration that he is airing views which are ridiculous and which have no basis whatsoever.
What the question is: What is it that is forcing the Congress leadership to swallow insults, taunts and humiliations? What is its weakness? Why has the Congress given a long rope to the NC overlooking the fact that the latter cannot remain in power even for a day without its support? True that JKPCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz has expressed his displeasure over what could be described as the Chief Minister’s uncle’s scathing attack on the Congress. It’s also true that JKPCC vice-president G N Monga has severely criticized the Chief Minister’s uncle. But what they have said is just not enough. The NC leadership is not that reasonable that it would see reason. Actually, it is out to destroy the Congress party. The JKPCC should see through the game plan of the NC and act accordingly. The sooner it does so the better. It has to demonstrate its strength and authority and it can do so only if it is prepared to say goodbye to the NC and face fresh elections.
