A day after 3 got killed in shell blast at Bishnah, police find 3 live shells | Shells allegedly belong to BSF | | JAMMU, Nov 27: A day after three members of a family, including a BSF cop, got killed in a shell explosion at their residence at Kotli Charkan-Kullah in Bishnah, three similar live shells were recovered from the village canal early this morning. The shells were said to have been thrown into the canal by the victims' family, according to police sources. BSF cop Avinash Singh (32), his daughter Lovely (1.5) and elder brother Kulbir Singh were killed and six other family members, including old parents, were wounded critically in the explosion. The shell had exploded while Kulbir was trying to break it to extract metal. Sources said some villagers, who had gone to the fields in the morning to attend the call of nature, sighted the shells in the canal waters when they went there to wash themselves. These were said to have been thrown into the canal by the victims' family after the blast in their houses, the sources added. The 84mm shells are Indian made and are fired by machine gun rocket launcher. Sources said such shells were being used by both army and BSF. Since Avinash was posted in 99 Bn of BSF in Gujarat, police suspected that he could have brought them home clandestinely to extract metal. Since Avinash was no more, only the family members could tell police who had brought them home, the sources added. The recovered shells were brand new and matched the splinters of the exploded shells, the sources added. Sources said after the villagers sighted them in water, they brought the matter to the notice of police. The Bishnah police immediately reached the spot. The shells were removed to a field by Sub-Inspector Madan Singh Manhas, who examined them. Sources said the shells were later buried in a 4 ft deep pit and defused.Police investigation was on in the case, the sources added.
