Omar showers praises on police faced with allegations of "fake" encounters | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 27: Even as police are under severe public criticism after the alleged "fake" encounter of Giri near Satyam Resorts here Sunday last, chief minister Omar Abdullah today showered praises on the force, describing it as one of the best in the country. Addressing attestation-cum-passing out parade of police women in basic recruit training course at Sher-e-Kashmir police training academy in Udhampur, he said J&K police were emerging as one of the best forces in the country. He, however, did not elaborate on how the force could be rated as one of the best at the national level when there was much hue and cry over the alleged criminal Giri's encounter.Giri's family has levelled serious allegations against police, saying he was killed in a "staged" encounter. His father Jeet Raj had also sought Omar's intervention for a thorough probe into the incident.Talking to The Early Times, he said, "Omar is not only chief minister of Kashmir, he is chief minister of Jammu also."When he could show serious concern over such incidents in Kashmir, why he was silent in Giri's case, Jeet asked. Commenting on Omar's statement that his government would take steps to further modernise police force, he said insteady of making buildings and creating infrastructure, government should focus on producing quality cops. Though in his speech, Omar held the opinion that the role of police was crucial to nurture peace and protect life and property of citizens, it is surprising why he has not taken any notice of the Giri's encounter.
