Police fear no longer looms over criminals; 20 burglaries, decoities in as many days

JAMMU, Nov 27:
There is a theory going around among many senior officers of the state administration that police fear no longer looms over burglars and decoits, who have therefore become more conspicuous.On November 01, there were five reported burglaries, one broad daylight decoity and a chain-snatching incident.
* Lalisho Devi was going home in ward No 11 of Bishnah when two motorcycle-borne youth threw chilli powder in her eyes and robbed her of a gold chain along with a locket, two gold bangles and a purse containing a ring and Rs 3,000 in cash.
* In another incident, some unknown youth intercepted Sonia Verma, wife of Ravinder Kumar of Rajpura Magotrian, in her locality and snatched her gold chain.
* The shop of Om Prakash was burgled by thieves at Kunjwani. Rs 5,000 in cash and some items were stolen.
* Four burglaries were committed at Madha in Chenani area of Udhampur in the houses of Koushalaya Devi, wife of Bodh Raj, Hem Raj, son of Dina Nath, Trilok, son of Beli Ram, and Vijay Kumar, son of Prakash. While 25 tolas of gold and 20 tolas of silver ornaments, besides Rs 70,000 in cash, were stolen from Koushalaya's house, jewellery worth
lakhs was stolen from the houses of other victims.Holding the lowered night vigil by police responsible for the
thefts, the villagers had also held an anti-police demonstration.
* Two alleged burglars -- Tanveer Ahmad Zarar alias Rinku of Haveli Mohalla and Shoukat Ali alias Zarul of Quila Mohalla -- were captured by Bhaderwah police along with a large quantity of items, including gold jewellery they had stolen from different Bhaderwah areas.
On November 02, burglars struck at the house of Tata sumo driver Mohammad Latief near Malik Market at Narwal and decamped with cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees.On the day of the incident, while Latief was in Srinagar, his wife
had gone to her parents' house at Talab Tillo.
On November 06, thieves broke into the house of police cop Jeet Singh at Vishal Nagar, Talab Tillo, in broad daylight and decamped with cash and gold jewellery worth lakhs of rupees.
On November 08, another daylight theft took place in the house of government school teacher Om Prakash at Reasi when no one was home. Gold jewellery worth Rs 4 lakh was stolen.
On November 10, burglars broke into the house of BSF jawan Romesh Singh at Lale Da Bagh near Domana here and stole Rs 20,000 in cash and gold jewellery worth lakhs.
On November 11, thieves stole Rs 50,000 in cash and 16 tolas of gold ornaments from the house of retired colonel H S Bali at Sainik Colony.
On November 15, burglars entered the house of kerosene oil dealer Ashok Sharma in ward No 13 of Bishnah and stole a cash of Rs 1.5 lakh.Two alleged burglars -- Rajinder Singh and Tarun Dev Singh -- were held in Kathua on November 15 along with a large quantity of stolen items.
On November 20, thieves burgled a shop at Chabutra Bazar in Udhampur and decamped with a cash of Rs 35,000 and items worth thousands.* Pritam Sharma and two others were arrested by Kishtwar police for stealing goods from a truck at Thathri.
On November 22, a theft occured in the house of Govind Ram of ward No 13, Vijaypur. A cash of Rs 1,000 and gold jewellery weighing four tolas were stolen.
Meanwhile, in a broad daylight decoity at Gandhi Nagar in the house of Ravi Gupta on October 21, the accused had robbed the family of gold jewellery worth lakhs.
On September 22, burglars had stolen the gold ornaments from Santoshi Mata temple near Nagesh bridge in Rajouri. The stolen ornaments were valued at Rs 70,000.
On September 21, jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lakh was stolen from the house of Mubina Kousar in ward No 2 of Rajouri.
A senior police officer of the rank of ADGP said, "Burglaries and decoities take place when police fear no longer looms over criminals."
While protecting law-abiding citizens and dealing with them softly, police should deal sternly with law-breakers, he added.
He said police ought to remain vigilant to prevent thefts.
