Separation of Jammu from Kashmir the only solution | | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 28: The people of Jammu again observed an impressive bandh on Saturday, may be for three hours. Actually, the people of Jammu had been appealed to suspend economic activities and keep their shutters down, keep vehicles off the road and express their resentment over the activities undertaken by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to prepare ground for unsettling the settled issue of J&K only for three hours. It is not really important that the duration of the bandh/Chakka Jaam was just three hours or symbolic. What was important was the message the impressive bandh sent. The message was that there is no place whatever in the Jammu's scheme of things for the likes of Omar Abdullah, who have been issuing controversial statements at regular intervals questioning the very status of J&K and devising and implementing policies calculated to help militants and induce Pakistan and PoK-based Kashmiri terrorists to return to Kashmir and enjoy official patronage and hospitality at the cost of the suffering and unemployed youth and even the government employees who have not received arrears. It was not for the first time that the people of Jammu exhibited a remarkable unity against the fissiparous tendencies or against those in and outside the government who have been questioning the very status of J&K from time to time and perpetrating injustice after injustice on them. They have been taking recourse to the politics of bandh ever since 1949, when New Delhi sprang a big surprise and adopted Article 370 to pander to communalism and separatism in Kashmir. It is, however, a different story that they have suffered immense losses in the process, but gained practically nothing. On the contrary, Jammu has been witnessing the Kashmiri onslaught. The situation has climaxed to the point that the very identity of the people of Jammu province is under threat and that the Kashmiri rulers, in collaboration with their touts and henchmen in Jammu, have rendered them ineffective and unreal for all practical purposes. It is an established fact that the people of Jammu province represent the most neglected segments of society in the country. Whatever progress they have achieved thus far it has been the result of the private effort. As for the government, it has at no point of time given any patronage to the people of Jammu province. That's the reason there prevails widespread resentment, discontent and disaffection across the Jammu province. It would not be out of place to mention here that the aggrieved people of Jammu province are themselves responsible for their socio-economic and political degeneration. The reason: Their approach to the issues facing them has all along been faulty. They have always reacted and not done anything worthwhile to become an important part of the problem. They have always reacted to the Kashmir's politics of separatism, communalism and autonomy or to the Kashmir's Muslim identity politics and have never explained the nature of problem confronting them. Their one-point agenda should have been separation from Kashmir on the grounds that they had nothing in common with the people of the Valley, that they had their own distinct personality and identity, that their political aspirations were altogether different from those of the Kashmiri leaders, that the wedlock between Jammu and Kashmir was unnatural and that they could not live under a dispensation that was fundamentally separatist and communal and biased against them. The people of Jammu province and the seemingly Jammu-centric leadership continue to adopt the strategy that has not paid off. Nor would it ever help them surmount the problem they have been facing since October 1947. They have to change their strategy and demand separation from Kashmir. Separation from Kashmir alone could cure their ailment. They should learn from the Ladakhis, whose one-point agenda is Union Territory status and they are being heard. If the people Jammu province also want that must be heard and their problem addressed, they have to tread the path the Ladakhis have been following. |
