Stranded vehicles, passengers on way to Kashmir from Leh | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Nov 29 : All the passengers and vehicles, stranded on other side of the Zojila pass on Srinagar-Leh national highway, left for Srinagar from Drass and Kargil today. The passengers and vehicles, including trucks, remained stranded at different places, particularly at Kargil and Drass, the world's coldest place after Siberia, on the Srinagar-Leh national highway since November 26 when the road was declared closed by the authorities because of slippery road conditions following snowfall. However, on the instructions of Transport Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, cleared snow accumulated at Zojila and other parts between Sonamarg to Zero point on the highway. It was decided to allow traffic on the highway for two days from today so that the stranded passengers and vehicles are allowed to move towards their respective destinations. Today, traffic was allowed from Kargil to Srinagar, a traffic police official told UNI. The vehicles, including those carrying passengers arrived here this afternoon. He said vehicles from here to other side of the Zojila will be allowed tomorrow. However, the road will be closed for winter months from December Ist. The road was initially declared closed from October 25. However, as the weather remained dry it was decided to keep the highway, which connects the Ladakh region with the rest of the state till weather permits. However, on November 26 the highway was declared closed because of snowfall.
