Mushrooming unemployment | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Nov 25: The unorganized corporate zone and the saturation already having struck the public sector, the unemployed youth of the state is one of the most frustrated segment that is feeling the heat of joblessness. Added to this is the influx of variety degree colleges here coming from different states providing vast offer in lucrative courses, but of no avail to the educated youth of the region seeking employment in his own state. With the mushroom growth of engineering and other degree colleges in Jammu every year, the student community is getting the facility of higher and professional education on the doorsteps itself. This will surely open up new vistas to larger segments of the youth and enlarge their avenues in the job markets. But are these really sufficient to cater to the growing demand of the young Jammu and Kashmir, as the major section of the population comprises youth? And after passing out, is there really that vast job market that can take care of the unemployed youth? These are some questions which are bothering youngsters the most. The most common problem which the students face after completion of their secondary education is undue and unnecessary parental pressure in pursuit for lucrative careers. Most of the parents want their wards to become doctors, engineers, scientists, lawyers, to enable them to get good jobs which they feel is imperative for social status and their matrimonial prospectus. Jammu region has three engineering colleges, which includes one government college and two private colleges. The students, after passing out, face the heat of unemployment. “In the past few years there has been a mushroom growth of the different colleges in Jammu which also include few engineering colleges. No doubt we are getting wider educational opportunities but on the contrary there has hardly been any growth in setting up new job ventures in the state. Many engineers are already unemployed in the state and increasing number of pass-outs every year are adding to their count”, says Parbinder Singh, an engineering student. “When a person enters a colleges he nurtures many dreams as after completing his degree with good marks he will definitely get some good placement and he will settle down. But here its like most of the students who are nearing completion of their degrees go in depression as there are hardly any job opportunities in the state, so the mere thought of remaining unemployed haunts them,” he adds. “Our state has very few job opportunities. You can find engineers working in schools and colleges as teachers, teaching such subjects which they had never pursued themselves. By this they not only deceive students but to their conscience as well. Everyone has certain compulsion in life and to satisfy those obligations you have to accept whatever comes to you. Every one wants to show his talent but when a person is unemployed he just wants to do anything and everything that comes his way, “ says Sourabh, who completed his degree in computer engineering a year back and is still looking for a job. “If you are a degree holder in electronics and communication, getting a job in your field in the state is just next to impossible. It is true for every filed”, he adds. “If we really want that our state should progress then the need of the hour is to channelise the right talent in the right direction which is possible only by providing job opportunities to the educated youth,” says Ajay Sharma, an enginner, who is running a cyber café.
