Owl's not well: Despised bird the new target of tribes | | | AGENCY New Delhi, Nov 29 : The much-despised owls, associated with a wide range of myths, superstitions and black magic in Indian society, are also the key target of several tribes connected with bird trade, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. Quoting from a study report on illegal trade, trapping and use of owls in India titled 'Imperilled Custodians of the Night', Minister of State for Environment Jairam Ramesh told members in a written reply that these birds continued to be the main target of the hugely lucrative bird trade. He said to curb the illegal practice of large-scale slaughter of owls for black magic and other purposes during festivals, the birds have been added in the list of endangered species. Giving details, the Minister said the Forest Spotted Owlet (Athene Blewitti) was a critically endangered species of owl listed under Schedule I while other species of owls were listed in Schedule IV of the Wild Life (Proection) Act 1972, providing adequate legal cover for the endangered species. He said stringent penalties had been prescribed for violation of any provisions of the Wild Life (Protection) Act 1972 and important habitats of wild animals including owls had been declared as Protected Areas. Wildlife Crime Control Bureau had been established to control illegal trade in wild life and its parts and products.
