Soz 'snubs' Azad loyalists for 'reservations' | Endorsement of Rehabilitation policy | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 29: By endorsing the Surrender and Rehabilitation policy of Kashmiri militants in POK at a public function near RS Pura on Sunday, J&K PCC president Prof Saif-u-Din Soz has tried to 'kill two birds with one political stroke'- snubbing those within his own party who had expressed reservations, who mainly comprised loyalists of Azad faction besides making an attempt to keep NC, mainly Abdullahs in good humour who have been seen keeping some 'distance' with Soz for some time. The PCC chief who remained silent for days after the state cabinet approved this policy in the meeting last week, amid of course some reservations expressed by some Congress ministers. But he minced no words in welcoming the policy stating openly that it posed no threat to the integrity and security of the country. Approving it almost on the lines of the ruling partner NC, Soz said the policy needed to be seen from the humanitarian angle and there was nothing wrong if it would be implemented with amount of caution and vigilance in ascertaining that genuine youth who had a longing to lead peaceful lives become the beneficiaries. Prof Soz's arguments in justifying the policy adopted and approved by the coalition government, of which his party is main alliance partners has weight and substance in own place. But more than simply welcoming the policy for the first time publicly, the veteran Congress leader has hit out at not only former Chief Minister and Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad but also his loyalists who exhibited some hiccups in private and public forums too, contending some portions of the draft policy needed to be changed. Some Congress leaders even complained, rather grumbled that Congress as major alliance partner was not taken into confidence while framing the provisions of the vital policy. The president of the Pradesh Congress, exercising his authority over matters and decisions of political significance , has not only given a loud message that no different voices should emanate on this issue anymore but more importantly, in a way snubbed Azad's viewpoint right over the issue. Azad, it is pertinent to recall, was the first leader from the Congress to have criticized the Rehabilitation policy early this year even when it was not conceived by the government. Azad's reaction, which was seen diagonally opposed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's idea and theory about the new surrender policy. In fact this reaction led to a sort of bitterness between the duo as Omar had dared to challenge his authority in 'disapproving' by stating that he need not meddle in the affairs of the state and should keep his 'interference' confined to Health Ministry matters. By endorsing the Rehabilitation Policy Prof Soz has also tried to put all the speculations at rest that there are 'very serious' differences between the alliance partners over this issue. Moreover, his political gesture may also augur well to keep NC in general and Abdullahs in particular in good humour, who lately have not been feeling comfortable on his assertions as PCC chief on the matters of governance in the state. |
