11/29/2010 11:30:20 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Nov 29: Thwarting an attempt by militants of Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba to enter into Srinagar city, a brave constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police laid down his life but only after gunning down three ultras including a foreigner in outskirts of the city.
Giving details of the encounter, the second major in just over a month, police said three LeT terrorists were riding a motorcycle and attempting to enter the city ostensibly for killing policemen.
The militants were challenged by a team of policemen at Qamarwari check post and in the ensuing encounter constable Shabir Ahmed lost his life but only after killing the three motorcycle-borne terrorists, police officials said.
The militants were part of the LeT team holed in Pattan area of North Kashmir and attempting to sneak into the city for killing policemen standing on duty on roads and various intersections. This modus operandi has been used by LeT earlier as well.
A civilian Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, who was also injured in the crossfire, has been hospitalised.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir Shiv Murari Sahai said a pistol, a grenade and some other ammunition have been recovered from the spot.
Earlier, three militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit were killed in a fierce gun battle at Maloora, five km from Qamerwari area, on October 21.
Sahai said the militants were making attempts to disturb peace in Srinagar city but so far the security forces have foiled their plans.
Asked about the number of militants active in the city, he said there were no ultras in the summer capital.
"The militants come from other parts of the Valley, strike in the city and go back," he said.
Sahai said the LeT received a major set back as two of its top commanders Abdul Rehman and Muslim Zaraar were killed in an operation in Handwara area of Kupwara district on Saturday.
Zaraar, alias Muslim Bhai, was active in Sopore and Rafiabad belt of Baramulla district, he said.
Describing the killing of the two militants as a major breakthrough, he said, "With killings of these two militants, the activities of LeT in north Kashmir will decrease."
He said Rehman, also known among the militant ranks as "Naveed" and "Talood", was active in north Kashmir for the last four years and was wanted in a case related to the killing of three army personnel at Rajpora and Krimhoora.
"He (Rehman) was instrumental in exfilitration, infiltration and further distribution of LeT cadres in north Kashmir especially in Rafiabad, Sopore, Lolab and Handwara. He was also motivating over ground workers including women for arranging logistic hideouts and gathering inputs on local movements," the IGP said.
Rehman was a close associate of Abu Saad, former district commander and took over as divisional chief after exfilitration of Abu Saad in 2008, he said, adding that he was operating in Wadipora, Bakihaker, Krimhoora, Brinjal, Bawan, Wader Bala areas of Handwara.
He was also associated with divisional commander of LeT Furkan Bhai, district commander Noman Bhai (dead), Abdullah Ooni, district commander Lolab Qari Hamad, Abu Jabran and Ubaiddullah, district commander of Al-Badr Tameem alias Sonaullah and district commander of JeM Showket Bhai.
The recoveries made from the slain militants included two AK-47 rifles, six magazine, 125 rounds, one grenade launcher, six grenades and a packet of RDX, Sahai said.
Recovery of 7.8 quintals rice, 6.5 quintals flour, 20 litres of kerosene oil, 40 kgs mustard oil, 14 kgs of chilli powder and other spices from the hideouts indicated that the militants were planning to remain holed up in the forests during winter, he said.
To a question, Sahai said around 150 militants were active in three north Kashmir districts of Bandipora, Baramulla and Kupwara. They had used the recent unrest in the Valley to regroup and reorganise their ranks, he added.
