11/30/2010 9:21:12 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Nov 30 :- The state Government has asked the executing agencies to speed up work on various hydro electric projects so that the recurring power shortage problem was resolved.
Official sources said that inordinate delays in the completion of power projects, being bilt on the Chenab, the Indus and the Jehlum because of hurdles raised by Pakistan in the name of the Indus Water Treaty, had not allowed the state to utilise its water resources for generating electricity. The sources said that the state of Jammu and Kashmir had the potential of generating 20,000 MWs of electricity but so far only 12 per cent of this potential has been tapped.
The sources said that the NHPC had taken in hand construction of various power projects in the state and when complete the state could generate additional electricity to the tune of 1799. Various micro hydel projects were being built through public-private partnership. Work has been started on five projects having an installed capacity of 8705 MWs.
Three other major projects with an installed capacity of 2100 MWs was being taken in hand in joint venture. Since a number of projects were in the hands of the NHPC, the state PDC and other Government and private companies the National Confernce led ruling coalition has asked all these agencies to expedite work on these projects.
Already the state has been facing an annual loss of Rs.6,000 crores because of restrictions imposed by the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 on full utilisation of water of Chenab, Jehlum and Indus for power generation and irrigation. The centre has not responded to the repeated pleas of the state Government for compensation of this loss. Instead it has assured the state Government that it make available required funds for constructing more power projects through the NHPC and through the state agencies.
Official sources said that the idea behind the Government inst ructions to those engaged in the construction of various power plants was to make the state not only self-sufficient in electricity generation but in exporting part of power to other states that could give a boost to the state Government's revenue.
