Physiotherapists block road at P'tirthi for over 3 hrs
11/30/2010 9:23:27 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 30: Amidst raising of anti-government slogans, unemployed physiotherapists today blocked road at Panjtirthi in the heart of the city for over three hours, demanding jobs and setting up of separate state physiotherapy council for the regulation of their
educational standards.
They first demonstrated in front of divisional commissioner Pawan Kotwal's office and then blocked the road near the nearby information department at about 1.30 pm.
To stop them move further towards the city, police personnel, including women cops, led by DSP S S Sambyal, linked their hands and formed a human chain. The cops later laid a cordon around them. The agitated physiotherapists, however, broke the police cordon and
raced towards the city. The cops foiled their attempt following which they squatted in the middle of the road about 20 ft ahead of the information department, blocking flow of vehicles from both
sides.
Exercising restraint, DSP Sambyal did not allow cops to make use of force, but at the same time he asked the physiotherapists not to resort to voilence. In reply, the physiotherapists said theirs was a non-violent movement in support of their demands.
They also raised slogans against health minister Sham Lal and asked him to take requisite steps to adjust them in government hospitals. Dr Reetika and Akash Manhas said the government should consider them at par with MBBS and BAMS doctors and absorb them in jobs through
PSC.
They said there was also a need to set up separate physiotherapy council for the regulation of their educational standards and professional norms. They also demanded the reopening of government physiotherapy college for professional course. Reetika also demanded creation of posts for them at state and district levels. Their protest continued for over three hours. They dispersed at about 4.30 pm after additional deputy commissioner visited the spot
and spoke to them.
The additional DC assured them that their demands would be taken up with the concerned authorities. Following this assurance, they dispersed peacefully.
