Era of terror, oppression brought back in State: Mehbooba
11/30/2010 9:49:50 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Nov 30: Expressing her grave concern over uncontrolled and continued killing of innocent people in the Valley, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today said that ruling National Conference has once again brought back the black era of terror that it had presided over between the period of 1996 to 2002.
Addressing one day convention of the district committees of Pulwama and Shopian districts here today, Mehbooba Mufti reminded the people that during its tenure the PDP led government had established peace and tranquility in the state and restored dignity and honour of the people.
“On the one hand developmental activities were accelerated while on the other hand conducive atmosphere was created for initiating peace process in the state”, she said while highlighting achievements of the government headed by Mufti Mohammad Sayed, adding, “a sense of security was established among the people during that tenure”.
PDP chief said that draconian law like POTA was revoked in the state and Special Task Force (STF) was disbanded so as to restore confidence of the people.
“PDP has pioneered the process of peace and reconciliation which yielded encouraging results”, she said and reminded that it was all due to the efforts of PDP government that borders were opened and human right violation was controlled.
She, however, regretted that National Conference led regime has spoiled the atmosphere which was created by the PDP led government during its tenure.
“During the last two years National Conference has let loose a reign of terror in the state in general and Kashmir Valley in particular and in that period of time number of innocent people have been killed”, she said and regretted that after completing first circle of terror in which 111 people were brutally murdered by this dispensation and now this regime has started another round of killing in the name of militancy.
“This regime has brought the situation back where no one feels safe in the State and people finding it difficult to live with dignity and honour due to day today harassments, crackdowns and arrests”, PDP chief said and added that to hide its failures to deliver the NC has been taking the State back to the dark day of state oppression to establish artificial calm. This is evident from the unabated killing of innocent of people and wholesale arrest of youth.
She further said that rule of law has been collapsed in the State and there was complete fear and uncertainty in the minds of people.
In a reference towards broad daylight killings of four persons including one policeman in mysterious circumstances yesterday, PDP chief said that the so-called encounter was conducted in highly questionable circumstances.
“This is another attempt to tarnish image of Kashmir”, she said and pointed out that even some of the leaders of ruling party have raised questions over yesterday’s so-called encounter in the Srinagar city.
Exhorting the workers to take party’s agenda among the masses, she said that people have acknowledged and appreciated role being played by PDP in bringing peace in the State and solving their day today problems. “People have high hope on PDP and it is your responsibility to come up to the expectation of the people”, she said and added that PDP is only ray of hope among the people.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Pampore, Zahoor Mir said that ruling National Conference has lost its credibility because this government has failed to come up to the expectations of the people.
He said that performance of this regime confined only on papers while as miseries of the common people have been compounding with every passing day.
District president Pulwama, Ghulam Mohi ud Din Mir, district president Shopian Mohammad Shafi Bandey, Shoukat Gayoor, general secretary youth wing of PDP and others also addressed the convention.
