100 joined militant ranks this year: Khoda | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 30: Director general of police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda today said 100 youth had joined militant ranks this year. While the number of militancy-related incidents was almost same this year as compared to the last year, 100 more had joined militant outfits this year, he told reporters here this afternoon. There were 400 to 450 militants of different outfits active in the state, Khoda said. Khoda said there was slight improvement in the situation as 450 militancy-related incidents were reported this year till November 14 against 458 incidents last year. However, due to constant vigil, the incidents of hand grenade attacks had come down from 50 last year to 31 this year, he added. Due to major offensive launched by the different security agencies, including police, 217 militants were killed in different encounters against 228 last year. The number of security force personnel, who laid down their lives in these encounters was 67 this year, one less than last year. He said the security forces were able to stop civilian killing to some extent as 40 persons were killed against 67 last year. The number of civilians injured this year was 81 against 107 last year, Khoda said. The DGP said a large cache of arms ammunition, besides ration and other essentials, were recovered by the security forces from different hideouts in the state. He said according to information gathered from all sources, there were 400 to 450 militants active in Jammu and Kashmir. In reply to a question, he said less than 100 had joined the militant outfits here. Some of them had been recruited locally while others had infiltrated from across the border from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Khoda said the infiltration from across the border had not stopped. Going by the revelations made by the militants, including a foreign ultra arrested recently, militant camps were still operating in PoK, he said, adding some militants were waiting at launching pads to sneak into this side before the routes were closed due to snowfall. He said because of a close coordination between different security agencies, a number of top militants were eliminated. About yesterday's encounter at Qamarwari, he said all the three militants killed were working for Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). He said that they were also involved in the killing of two CRPF personnel on November 10 this year at Pattan. |
