| The daily increasing jamming on the roads in the Jammu and its outskirts regions have become a headache as well as a common feature and there seems no respite as well in the near future owing to the ever increasing traffic flow ,squeezing roads ,addition of the newer vehicles, ill widening of the roads, no available scope of the widening of the existing roads or due to the poor or ill conceived planning in regard to the finding of the alternatives to ease the pressures on the present road network. As a result of which , life has almost become a hell and reminds one of the Darwin’s theory of the Survival of the fittest, to reach at one’s target may it be one’s school ,workplace ,office ,hospital ,airport ,railway station or one’s destination etc. One has lost the word of certainty about one’s reaching one’s destination in time and the word of certainty has been replaced by the concept of presumption or assumption that to by the God willingness. An analytical study reveals that the Jamming is caused due to the non adherence to the traffic norms in sincerity , ill traffic mismanagement ,poor display of professionalism by those who are entrusted to execute the job on the regulation of the heavy volume of the traffic ,ill coordination between various agencies who are supposed to render the services in the road safety mobility . In broader terms ,it can be attributed that jamming is caused due to the ever growing congestion due to unabated encroachment by the rehri walas ,street hawkers ,extension carried out by the shopkeepers, forcing the drivers to ply their vehicles in much narrower space than desirability despite availability of ill occupied place. To add to the woe ,the pitiable road conditions like broken roads, big holes on the roads, and garbage’s thrown on the roadsides by the safaikaramcharis also squeezes the road space .Often it is seen that along the roads ,the extended branches of the trees too make the wider area quite narrower leaving space to less to be used and whatever space is used becomes too short to afford accommodation to overflowing vehicular rush. Apart ,there is an apt quotation that lane driving is the safe driving but this barely observed .Thus such poor driving skill adds to the issue more than carving a solution .Not only this ,generally it is seen that few violators poke the nose of their vehicle from the left side in a bid to overtake in the most blind curved areas resulting into the collusion and suicidal jamming for the minutes together .In order to ease the pressure of the jamming unrest ,instead of showing patience ,public as the road user starts forming 3 to 4 lanes on the same single tube adding up to land in the mess. Moreover, undue stoppages and frequent picking and dropping of the passengers to halt the speed of the vehicular mobility too become a cause of unwanted jamming. Sometimes sudden mechanical breakdown of the vehicles on road and non availability of the cranes to pick it to place on the sideways also become a troubleshooting concern for road users. In addition to these common causes, there are other scores of causes like accidents on the road ,felling of the trees during the rainy season, sinking of the embankments ,soil erosion during the monsoon, snowing during the winter ,falling down of the huge avalanches , overflowing nullahs along the roads during the rainy season leading to the filling of ditches making it to hard for the drivers to make an assessment regarding the roads and drenches too add to the woe of the road users . It has also been seen that overloaded vehicles both with the passengers as well as with the commercial goods equally slower down the pace of the flowing vehicles on the roads . Straying animals on the roads to check the mobility of the traffic flow and this also adds to the chaos. Even sometimes the drivers driving the vehicles under the influence of drugs and liquor cannot drive the vehicles with the confidence and they ply the vehicles in most dangerous manner forcing the other users to slower down their own speed. The tremendous pressure is built during the movement of the VVIP’S by the security men of the concerned dignitary as a result of which the whole traffic comes to halt for minutes together adding to the jamming due to overcrowding all around the rotaries, in the bye lanes and on the connecting lanes of main supply line. Such huge choking results in extra jamming which cannot be cleared in the shortest possible time. In gist, all such above stated factors can be clubbed and categorised into following major heads i.e., Jamming caused due to the environmental conditions, Traffic mix with high density population, poor driving skills on the part of the drivers and their driving habits, Unworthy road conditions, Geometrical ill conceived rotaries ,short curved curvatures , Non availability of adequate amount of the parking slots on the roadsides, Non availability of traffic signals at the intersections and at the T-junctions and above all poor coordination among various agents of the road maintenance ,formation and repairs etc. The heavy jamming leads to the sheer wastage of time, excessive wastage of the fuel ,minimises fuel efficiency due to intermittent application of brakes .Further it leads to hypertension ,fatigue mental stress ,over use of the shrill horns affects the listening power,and overall physical strength too suffers severe setback to recoup at the earliest. Not only this ,even emitted pollution in form of carbon dioxide, sulphurous oxide and other pollutants too affect harmful for the breathing. Eyes feels irritation ,itching and clothes worn become filthy to much to be used next day again. Generally some people complain of the regular nausea ,giddiness ,vomiting etc .Especially during the winter season ,smog developed during the winter season makes life altogether more miserable to ply the vehicle in safer way as rate of the accidents increases due to poor visibility arisen out of the pollutants in jamming areas .Worst suffers are those helpless ones who have to wait for medical treatment but remain struck in the ambulance for the hours together for no fault of theirs or those ones who had to board aeroplane ,train or appear in the examination. In gist ,jamming is a traffic malady which needs urgent attention in this world of mad race and competitive rush so that no one suffer and reach one’s concerned destination without any problem .If we manage to streamline the system in a more scientific way ,there is no second thought that efficiency level of every one will grow manifold .All those places where ever rotaries can be extended beyond existing domain shall be earmarked and widening of the roads be taken up as top priority. It is generally seen that repairs of the roads only take place at that time when any VVIP’S visit is slated in that area or on that route otherwise such areas remain unattended for the months and years together for the general masses to lick the dust and curse their own fate .Why the efficiency level increases only on such movements is a big million dollar question in itself to seek answer .Rest , we the general masses as road users should spare no effort in observing the traffic lane set up and must not ingress in the other lane without following traffic signals. We should be patient and tolerant in streamlining the traffic flow altogether .Unless good traffic sense prevails upon us , mess will remain and we shall be subjected to frustration caused due to our own adopted myopic approach towards traffic system. Only a disciplined attitude can bring sea change in the smooth flow of the traffic .Mere application of the stringent laws cannot carry us to the heights.
