Educational institutions, organizations observe AIDS day | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 01: A series of functions including rallies, awareness programmes and lectures at different educational institutions, hospitals viz a viz offices of social organizations across state marked the World AIDS day. On the occasion, a seminar was organised to mark the World AIDS Day at Government College for Women Gandhi Nagar, here today. Addressing the gathering, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare Sham Lal Sharma, who was chief guest, called upon the cross sections of the society to contribute their bit in eradicating the dreaded AIDS disease. He sought support from religious organizations, NGOs, intellectuals and educational institutions and asked them to use their influence to create awareness among the general masses for the prevention of AIDS. The seminar was organized by the Jammu &Kashmir State AIDS Prevention and Control Society in collaboration with the Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar. It was attended by hundreds of students, Members of NGOs, teachers, doctors and para-medicos from across the Jammu division. Saying that sex education is must for the adolescent at the secondary education level to save the children from the onslaught of this killer disease, he asserted that parents should make an attitudinal change and guide their wards properly in a friendly way. Earlier, the Minister flagged off a rally to mark the World AIDS Day at Akhnoor. The rally was jointly organized by the Rotary Club, Sub-District Hospital, Degree College and peripheral schools of Akhnoor. Hundreds of students, teachers, doctors, Members of NGOs and prominent citizens participated in the rally. The rally passed through the main bazaar of Akhnoor and culminated at the famous Kameshwar temple. Sant Nirankari Missioin, Akhnoor branch arranged stalls of refreshments for the participants on the occasion. An AIDS awareness rally was organized by NSS unit of MIER College of Education to mark World AIDS Day. Dr Renu Gupta Director MIER, Group of Institutions flagged off the rally. Other dignitaries present were Dr Adit Gupta, Joint Director, Annie Koul, HoD B Ed wing, Dr Surinder Kour, Controller of Examinations and the members of the staff of the college of education. About a hundred NSS volunteers of B Ed, B Ed. Special education and M Ed took out the rally from MIER College to Indira Chowk, Raghunath Bazar, Jain Bazar Chowk and then back to college. The students distributed pamphlets among the public to create awareness about the need to safeguard against the fatal disease of AIDS. The pamphlets carried information related to the main sources of transmission of HIV virus, common myths about AIDS and means to control AIDS. The rally was very successful as the students spread the message among the community with great sense of responsibility. Slogans related to AIDS were also displayed in the college campus to create awareness among the students of the college. Earlier all the staff members were given red ribbons to wear, in order to show their solidarity with this noble cause. The event was organized under the able guidance of Vinod Kalra, NSS Programme Officer and Komal Sharma, Convener co-curricular committee. To spread the message of prevention of AIDS, the NSS Unit-II of Govt M.AM College organized a glittering function in the shape of blood donation Camp. The blood donation was led by Dr R K Bhat. Programme Officer, Unit¬II who along with 13 student volunteers donated 14 units of blood to the Blood Bank of Govt Medical College, Jammu. Department of Psychology and Health Centre, University Of Jammu in association with Rotary Club Jammu organized an AIDS awareness camp near fountain plaza of the University on occasion of World AIDS Day. Red Ribbons along with pamphlets pertaining the information about AIDS, its causes, prevention were distributed amongst the students and staff of the University. Dr R D Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs was Chief guest at this function. Dr N K Tripathi, DSW, suggested measures to make this camp more fruitful for students and staff of the University. Students’ Cultural Council, University of Jammu organized an awareness programme on world AIDS day in the dept. of law. The chief guest on the occasion was Prof VP Magotra HOD Dept. of Law. The resource persons who delivered lectures on the occasion were Dr Manju V. Gupta C.M.O health centre Jammu University and Dr. C. S. Chandra, Sr. Professor of Psychology dept. The welcome address was made by Mr. Fairoz Khan, student of law dept. He assured full support to the student cultural council in organizing such programmes. Prof VP Magotra appreciated the programme started by the student cultural council and said this kind of awareness programme was first kind he has seen by any student cultural council body and working for betterment of society besides promoting their culture. The resource persons elaborated the topic and the various measures to prevent the HIV. The lecture given by the resource persons were heard by the students silently .Prof Arvind Jasrotia was also present on the occasion. Army School Akhnoor held an awareness campaign to observe AIDS Day. Col A K Choudhary Col Medical presided over as the chief guest. During the campaign interactive sessions were held by two doctors. Dr Arora, from 310 Field Ambulance gave awareness on causes and prevention of AIDS and also answered the queries of students. Dr Gaffoor Ahmed from Akhnoor, who is a reputed-doctor, social worker and political leader, also gave many eye-opening facts regarding AIDS. Dr Surinder Sharma from Sub District Hospital Akhnoor also spoke on this day. Other medical experts present and interact with students were Col Jaspal Singh, CO 170 MH, Lt Col R Sengupta from 410 Fd Hospital. NSS unit of Dogra College of Education, Bari Brahmana organized a Slogan writing and Poster Making competition on the theme “AIDS” on 01st Dec 2010 at 10:00 AM in the college assembly ground under the supervision of Mrs. Rajni Mnhas N.S.S. Programme Officer. Principal, Dogra College of Education, Dr (Mrs) Kiran Luthra in her address expressed her concern over the fact that most people, even among the educated masses are ignorant about HIV and are believed to cause AIDS that has facilitated its spared considerably. She further added that awareness is the only to combat this problem. Samar Dev Singh Charak, Secretary Dogra Education was the guest of honour. Speaking on the occasion Charak, highlighted that HIV is highly stigmatized in India and much needs to be done at Macro Levels. He stressed upon the students to educate masses and to adopt preventive method against AIDS. Thirty students participated in the competition. At the end prizes and certificates of merit were distributed among the participants. Rotary club Jammu Tawi in Association with GFATM Project under Psychology Department University of Jammu celebrated World AIDS Day today here in Jammu University Campus. The study materials on AIDS, brochures, pamphlets were distributed to spread the awareness regarding AIDS. President Dr.Dushyant and HOD Psychology were present on the occassion Red ribbons were pinned to the students, Teachers of various departments of the University to make them realize the importance and significance of this day. Dean Students Welfare University of Jammu Prof RD Sharma was the chief guest on the occasion Renowned Psychologist Dr Chand Trehan, Rotarian President Dr Dushyant Chowdhry, Rtn Aseem Tandon, Rtn PP Kuldeep Rai, Rtn PP Anil Gupta, Rtn Subash Gandotra,rtn Raman Sherpuri Rtn Tp Broca , VK Sharma and VK Mehra were also present. R M College of Education in collaboration with Vichar Kranti Manch,(NGO) organized a programme on ‘AIDS DAY’ in the premises of NSK High School, Channi Himmat,Jammu. Principal of the college PK Dhar welcome the guests and highlighted the importance of the day and threw light on prevention and cure of deadly disease. Students of R.M. college of Education and NSK High School spoke on the occasion. Dr Gurmeet Singh, President, NSK High School in his address made it clear that it is the high time to make masses aware about the disease so that it can be checked at an early stage. Members from Vichar Kranti Manch Dr R.R.Khajuria and Trustee of the college Smt Rita Mengi also expressed their views on the occasion. Vijay Sharma principal of NSK High school presented vote of thanks while Kirti Spolia ( Lecturer, R.M. College of Education ) conducted the entire proceeding of the programme. The World AIDS day was celebrated by the Regional Education Society with the collaboration of AIDS Control Society J&K in the premises of the office of RES Kathua here today. To aware the present people on the occasion the Gen. Secy. Sh. Suraj Parkash said that it is the mission of the RES to control over the spreading of this chronic disease by providing the counseling the people. On the occasion the students of the institute also delivered their massage to the human community to be aware about the danger of AIDS. In the programme Dr Jagdish Bhagat, CHO Kartar Verma, Project Manager, Reena Sumbria, were also present. Department of Immunology & Molecular Medicine, Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar organized a programme to commemorate “World AIDS Day”. During the programme Prof. M. A. Siddiqi, Prof. & Head Department of Immunology & Molecular Medicine gave details of the current scenario of the AIDS and the facilities available to detect HIV / AIDS infection at SKIMS. It was emphasized that facilities available globally, particularly in the developing parts of the world population in general and physicians in particular, need to create awareness among the masses in order to reduce the global quantum of this disease. On this occasion Director SKIMS, Dr. Abdul Hamid Zargar, emphasized the need for upgradation of all health care facilities to detect and treat this disease at the earliest. Justice B. A. Kirmani (Rtd.) who was the Chief Guest on this occasion elaborated on the human rights issues in relation to AIDS. The theme of 2010-World AIDS Day is “Universal Access and Human Rights”. On this occasion others who enlightened on the subject include Dean Medical Faculty Prof. M. A. Darzi; HOD Community Medicine, Prof. Imtiyaz Ali; and Dr Lateef Charru. The faculty, senior residents, post-doctoral and post-graduate students also attended the programme.
People's Association for Social Reforms and Justice(PASJ},a social and self supported organization, for the third consecutive year organized an awareness drive on the occasion of the "World AIDS Day. Under this awareness drive, PASJ members distributed red ribbons and pamphlets containing information about AIDS to the general masses in various areas of Jammu, including Kachi Chawni area and outside many educational institutions like Sant Rocha Singh Degree College, GGM Science College and MAM College. Chairman PASJ J.S. Rissam, said that the purpose for distributing this informative material was to create more awareness among people about this deadly disease and measures needed for preventing the spread of the disease.
