Jammu stinks on civic front, waste disposal management still a far fetched dream
12/1/2010 10:16:39 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu DEC 01: How much Jammu’s developmental scenario expands, it is bound to carry a stigmatic challenge on the civic front with one big issue of solid waste management not getting the due disposal.
This poses immense pressure on civic amenities and ensuring health and hygiene.

The open drains, encroachment of road side, the traffic mismanagement are some of the
most common problems the city is facing, but the open bins and the garbage littered around these bins also add to the woes of the people.

Worn out and broken bins are a public nuisance and an eyesore for the Jammuites . Just take a walk through any street or road in city and one will find heaps of garbage scattered all over outside the broken bins. Nearly all the bins are broken from the sides and what remains are only the iron frames of the bins; it seems the rag pickers or the drug addict will soon drag these frames to the scrap dealer for its price.

“The city that should have otherwise looked a clean and aesthetic city, being the base point to two important pilgrimages of Mata Vaishno Devi and Amarnath besides lakhs of tourists visiting scenic Kashmir every year, presents a very grim look. Enter the city and find heaps of garbage littered everywhere”, says Urja Mahajan, a resident of Nanak Nagar

“There are so many places within the city and in the city outskirts where the authorities have placed these dust bins so that the garbage could be dumped there. But these garbage bins have merely been reduced to the iron frames,” rues, Banita, a housewife from
Upper Nanak Nagar area.

Just opposite to Bahuplaza, near Zorawar Singh Chowk, hardly at a distance of few meters, one such dust bin has been placed. There are two parks just close to the place where the dustbin has been placed and it has now become a headache for the people to go for the evening walk as there are very few who dispose off the waste materials in these bins.
“The garbage is littered on the roads. Even the rehriwalas while coming back from their work, which specially serve food material also dump their waste here, but despite dumping in the bins they throw the waste on roads, as many stray cattle roam near it and that waste serve as food for those cattle,” says Janak Raj , a banker , who resides near Shivaji Chowk.

“The open garbage bins have turned out to be the biggest source of nuisance as the stray dogs and rag pullers get busy since wee hours to find out ‘something which interests them’ and scattering the whole filth on the roads”, he maintain
‘Purshotam Kumar says, adding that the Jammu Municipal Corporation had placed large waste bins in every locality for collection of the house-hold waste, with a purpose to carry it through the lorries to dedicated spots.
