RANAS: A tale of two brothers | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 1: Here is a tale of two Rana brothers, though they are three. The third brother lives his own life away from public domain. It is a very interesting tale. One is a doctor-cum-columnist and the other is a technocrat-cum-businessman-cum political advisor. One preaches nationalism, democracy and secularism and always keeps company with those who have been fighting regressive, backward-looking, extremist and separatist forces in Kashmir. The other is flirting with the protagonists of greater autonomy, bordering on a virtual sovereignty, and preaching fake secularism. One is hailing the critics of greater autonomy, self-rule and independence and terming the critics as nationalists. The other is denouncing the protagonists of Indian sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity as communalist of communalists, reactionaries and divisive. In fact, he is using all kinds of invectives and epithets against nationalists to remain in the good books of his political master/masters. One is taking on the authorities for according a step-motherly treatment to the people of Jammu and Ladakh and urging them to dispense justice to the neglected people. The other is describing the votaries of Jammu's political and economic empowerment as regionalist, chauvinist, parochial, reactionary and what not. One made common cause with those in 2008 who demanded reallocation of the Baltal land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board for creating additional facilities for the Shri Amarnath Yatris and joined the movement in a big way putting at stake even his career. The other remained dormant or sided with the one who had outraged the national sentiment and religious sensitivities of the devotees of Lord Shiva by declaring in the parliament "land belongs to us, we will not give an inch of land, we have been fighting for our land and we will continue to do so." One is a critic of those demanding withdrawal of the Army, Armed Forces Special Powers Act and other anti-terror laws so that the extremists and separatists in Kashmir are neutralized. He consistently says and writes: "Terrorist is a terrorist." The other is flirting with those who have been demanding withdrawal of the Army and anti-terror laws, questioning the very accession of the state to India, preparing ground for the return to Kashmir of dreaded militants and jihadis from Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. There are umpteen other de-similarities between the two brothers. Is it not an interesting tale? Indeed, it is a very interesting tale. But this is a material world and in a material world such things do happen. In this material world, everyone exploits everyone for the worldly gain, which means many things, including good and bad. This tale needs to be viewed in this context. |
