Pak not to abandon LeT at any cost: WikiLeads | | | If ever any confirmation was required for the geniuses of India’s contention that Pakistan was responsible for blocking the process of composite dialogue it has come from none other than a top American diplomat, Anne Patterson, who at one stage was US ambassador to Pakistan. In her cable on February 4,2009 to the US special envoy for Pakistan-Afghainstan region, Richard Holbrook, Patterson had conveyed to the US envoy that Pakistan based Lashkar-i-Toiba engineered terrorist strike in Mumbai had closed the doors of Indo_ Pakistan dialogue on settling the Kashmir issue. She had also conveyed to Holbrook that since India was not satisfied with the action Pakistan had initiated against the perpetrators of the Mumbai strike the channels of bilateral dialogue had been choked. The contents of the cable form part of the US classified documents which have been recently released by the whistle-blower website WikiLeads. Patterson had even gone to the extent of claiming that the Pak Army and the ISI were not prepared to initiate any action against the activists of Lashkar-i-Toiba. In addition to this disclosure the WikiLeads has disclosed that the establishment in Pakistan was not prepared to act against the terrorist outfits, especially Lashkar-i-Toiba. According to the latest report six Pakistanis and one Nigerian, belonging to Lashkar-i-Toiba, and involved in the Mumbai strike of 2008, were arrested in Spain. This has further confirmed the involvement of LeT in the terrorist strike. Whatever action or operations Pakistan Government launched against the terrorist outfits was nothing more than consmetic. Over the years the successive Governments in Islamabad have been banking on the support of not only the fundamentalists but of extremists and terrorists. In this connection WikiLeads has claimed that no amount of money and no quantum of pressure could motivate Islamabad for withdrawing support to the terrorist outfits. Patterson has conveyed to Washington that since 2001 Pakistan has received over 16 billion dollars in aid which the US Government had sanctioned to motivate Pakistan for abandoning its support to the terrorist outfits but no amount could change the policy of the Pakistani Army and the ISI. The two wings of the Government in Pakistan believe that by providing moral and material support to Lashkar men they could pose many security related problems for India. If the WikiLeads disclosure is to be believed Patterson had informed Washington that the Pakistani Army and the ISI continued to support four terrorist groups,Afghan Taliban,Haqqani and Hekmatyar networks on the western Afghan frontier and Lashkar-i-Toiba on the eastern border with India. This clearly indicates that during the last several years Pakistan’s proxy war in India in general and in Jammu and Kashmir is particular was being fought by the activists of Lashkar-i-Toiba.And the activists of the same outfit are said to have been involved in the Mumbai strike. This way Washington seems to follow anti-India policy, no doubt indirectly and not deliberately, by sending heavy military and non-military aid to Pakistan. Over the years Pakistan has been behaving like a rogue state vis-a-vis India and those who favour Washington to declare Pakistan as a rogue state argue that Islamabad’s direct support to the proxy war against India is enough reason for giving this title to Pakistan. And judged by Patterson’s report New Delhi’s fears over the possibility of Pakistan misusing the American weapons and war machinery against India seem to be genuine. India has conveyed these fears to Washington but the US Government seems to have faith in Islamabad which has encouraged it to dismiss Delhi’s fears. Since the entry of the Soviet troops into Afghanistan Washington has been sending heavy military equipment and other military aid to Pakistan for onward transmission to the Afghan Talibans who had been engaged for fighting the Soviet forces. Portion of these weapons and other war machinery had been retained by Islamabad and these very weapons were being given to the militants before they are pushed into Jammu and Kashmir and into other Indian states for kicking up subversive violence. Since the WikiLeads release has disclosed that Pakistani Army and the ISI continued to back three militant groups, including Afghan Taliban, on the western Afghan frontier possibilities of the NATO forces, led by the American troops, succeeding in eliminating the terrorist elements and in establishing rule of law through an elected civilian regime in Afghanistan were remote.
