Inter-college paper reading competition on 'save heritage' organized

JAMMU, Dec 2: An Inter-college Paper Reading competition was organized at MIER College of education in collaboration with Viraj Kala Kendra on the theme 'Why should we save our Heritage?'. The chief Guest of the occasion was Minister for School Education, Peerzada Mohd. Syeed.
The Guest of Honour was Zafar Iqbal, Secretary J&K Academy of Culture, Arts and Language. Some renowned personalities who graced the occasion were Raj Bharti, General Secretary Viraj Kala Kendra, N.D. Jamwal, a well respected artist and Sahitya Kala Academy Awardee, Manmohan Singh, an artist and writer of national repute, Kirpal Singh, a famous figure working on culture and heritage, Dr. Adit Gupta, Joint Director MIER and Annie Koul, HOD B.Ed wing of MIER College of Education.
At the onset, Dr. Adit Gupta congratulated the Viraj Kala Kendra for organizing the event on a very pertinent theme where educational institutions can play a major role in spreading awareness amongst the masses.
Raj Bharti, gave a brief introduction to the Viraj Kala Kendra and its various activities including programmes for women empowerment, children education and promotion of art and culture. This was followed by the paper- reading session in which participants from various colleges presented their views on the conservation and preservation of our heritage.
Radhika Mahajan of GCW Parade clinched the first prize while Kokila Kohli representing Gandhi Nagar College and Sunaina Sharma of MIER College were adjudged second and third respectively. Tanisha of MIER College of Education was awarded the consolation prize.
Peerzada Mohd. Syeed, in his address brought to the limelight the diverse culture of the State of J&K, which needs to be preserved in the right earnest. He apprised the audience about the historical relevance of various monuments, the achievements of the Dogra culture, the ethnicity of the Kashmir and Ladakh regions and why is it important to conserve and preserve the same. The Chief Guest also congratulated MIER for promoting cultural values through education in the youth of the state.
Zafar Iqbal,stressed upon the need to take practical measures to conserve the heritage which according to him also includes values and traditions.
Prizes and certificates were distributed to the participants by the Guest of Honour. Mementos were also presented to the dignitaries on behalf of Viraj Kala Kendra. The event succeeded in enlightening and awakening the youth with regard to their rich heritage.
