| Two-Day International Conference begins at JU | | Governor calls for conducive business environs, strong value system | | EARLY TIMES REPORTER JAMMU | NOV 4 Skillfully differentiating between the army management and business management, Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha today said that a significant transformation has taken place over the years, unfolding a new prospect in this area. Inaugurating a two-day international Conference on 'Strategic thought in the New Age Management' organized by Business School of Jammu University here this morning; the Governor emphasized the role of strategic thinking in today's complex business environment and importance of good governance besides building up strong value system. Dwelling on the growth of management, he said it used to be an exclusive realm of the army some centuries ago but lately it has emerged as a buzzword for the corporate sector. He elaborately spelled out some similarities between management in the army and the corporate sector saying that the goal of the former is victory and the latter endeavours for profit. Area of action for the army is battlefield and market place for business sector; he said adding that the concept of profit and victory, however, has changed in recent year. 'Now wars are considered to be monstrous while soldiering a vanished art', he added. Vice Chancellor, Prof Amitabh Mattoo while speaking on the occasion stressed upon the importance of leadership in the new age management. Changing paradigms require strategic thinking approach and the thinking can be translated in action only if there is a strong leadership, he said. In his keynote address, Prof Keith Bradely from the Provo Group, USA raised issues regarding the radical changes taking place and the way these changes will affect strategic thinking process. In particular, he discussed issues regarding population changes, resources, technology, information integration, conflict and governance. Prof Arun Kumar Jain from Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, emphasized on the forces that were enabling Indian companies to think about globalization and restructuring. Comparing the statistics with the developed world, he said, on the one hand the key detrimental factor is the inadequate supply of proper infrastructure, on the other; India offers advantages in terms of efficient tax regulations. Earlier, in his welcome address, Director of the Business School welcomed all the delegates and presented the achievements of the school in recent times. Prof Neelu Rohmetra, Conference Secretary shared the details about the event and spoke about themes as also about the conduct of the conference. She said that a special symposium on 'Women & Management' is being organized in collaboration with the School of Management, Boston, and USA. Prof J R Dutta presented the vote of thanks. On the occasion, the Governor also released the proceedings of the conference and a book titled 'Strategic thought in the New Management', containing selected research papers, placement brochure of MBA students and a souvenir. 60 delegates are attending the conference from various institutions and countries across the world. Intellectuals, faculty, students and delegates attended the inaugural function. Students of Government Women College, Parade presented a cultural programme on the occasion.
