JKNPP for governor's rule, BJP for social boycott of NC-Congress ministers | STARK REALITY | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 2: Both the Panthers Party (JKNPP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have upped their ante and unleashed a no-hold-barred propaganda blitz against the National Conference (NC)-Congress coalition government. The JKNPP has been demanding imposition of governor's rule in the state, saying that the NC-led coalition government has miserably failed to establish rule of law; that there exists no government worth its name in the state; that corrupt elements are reigning supreme or on a looting spree; that it has been challenging the political status of J&K by raking up the accession/merger issue; that it is out to bring back to Kashmir over three thousand dreaded militants; and that it has been denying the people of Jammu province their due share in the state's political and economic processes. One cannot but agree with the JKNPP, notwithstanding its controversial stand on the Monday's Qamarwari incident that left three terrorists and one policeman dead. There is no doubt that all the charges of the JKNPP are well-founded. As for the BJP, it has been urging the people to socially boycott the NC-Congress ministers. The charges levelled by the BJP are the same. The BJP leadership is not only educating the public opinion through media but also organizing meetings on a daily-basis to mobilize their cadres across the Jammu province with a view to creating a hostile environment for the NC-Congress ministers as well as the NC-Congress local leadership. They have even planned to hold a "Maha Rally" on December 24 in which at least four top-ranking national leaders, including BJP national president Nitin Gadkari, former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani and Leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, would take part. The stated objective of the BJP is to educate the public opinion in the state and in the rest of the country about the dangerous ramifications of the policies being ruthlessly pursued by the NC-Congress ruling coalition in the state. Obviously, they want to achieve two main objectives - consolidate and expand their constituency in the Jammu province and create an awkward situation for the Congress party across the country. The Congress is already in deep trouble. The Parliament has not been functioning since November 9, when the winter session started. The reason: the opposition parties are demanding Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe in the multi-crore 2G spectrum and Common Wealth Games (CWG) scams, to mention only a few. Adarsh Society scam too has dented the image of the Congress party across the country. It has been at the receiving end in Maharashtra. It is facing serious troubles in Andhra Pradesh. It has not been able to register its presence in Bihar and is facing serious crisis in Uttar Pradesh. It is also not standing on a sound wicket in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It has been losing ground in Gujarat at an alarming speed. Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) PJ Thomas has created additional difficulties for the Congress party and the Congress-led UPA government by clinging on to his constitutional position, despite the Supreme Court's repeated censure. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is facing a serious revolt from within, with Mamta Bannerjee of Trinmol Congress and NC also demanding resignation of Thomas. Significantly, the Congress party, too, has been forced to adopt anti-Thomas stand. It is also important to note that the media, both print and electronic, has become highly critical of the Congress party and the UPA government. It is accusing the Congress and the UPA government of shielding the corrupt. And, here in J&K, the Congress is facing a very serious trouble. Its association with the NC is proving very costly. It has not been asserting and opposing the policies being meticulously evolved and systematically implemented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Omar Abdullah is working overtime to regain the ground he has lost in the Valley. He is not interested in Jammu. In fact, he has abandoned Jammu province because he knows it full well that his outfit has become thoroughly unpopular. The Congress should have seen through the Chief Minister's sinister game-plan and come out of the government to establish its anti-militant and anti-Pakistan credentials. It has not done so and the result is that the Congress ministers and senior leaders have become a laughing stock in this province. The fact is that they have become objects of contempt and ridicule. The ground is fertile both for the JKNPP and the BJP and they are exploiting the situation to the hilt. The Congress ministers and leadership are themselves responsible for the state of affairs they are in. There are reasons to believe that the Congress ministers and leaders are in a self-destruction mode and that they would not take cudgels with the erring Chief Minister because they are guided more by the personal interests than by the party interests. It is for the Jammu-based Congress and NC cadres to step in and force their leaders to behave. They alone can make the ministers and their leaders see reason. |
