Hiranagar College holds symposium on World AIDS Day | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, December 03: Government GL Dogra Memorial Degree College Hiranagar in district Kathua organised an inter-college symposium wherein colleges of Jammu Division took part. Polina Singh from Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar bagged first place while Anshul Gupta of Government MAM College and Sukhwinder Kour of Government Degree College, Samba were adjudged second and third respectively. Participating students expressed their views on the topic, “Human Rights and Access to Treatment of AIDS”. In all, 10 colleges participated in the day-long activity. Member Legislative Council, Subash Gupta was chief guest while Major Ritesh Srivastav was guest of honour. Earlier, Principal of the College, Prof (Dr) Nater Singh Raina welcomed the guests. He informed the gathering that the first World AIDS Day was celebrated on December Ist 1988. Speaking on the occasion, special invitee, Subash Gupta said that India has a population of more than one billion and around half of whom are adults in the sexually active age group, so awareness about AIDS was a must. Dr OP Thappa and Captain (Dr.) Sourab were the main resource persons. Capt. Sourab explained that HIV can be passed on through infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids or breast milk. HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, the body’s defence against diseases. Prof. Shally Gupta presented vote of thanks. Prof. Deepshikha acted as incharge of the event.
