GDC Udhampur organizes National Conference on Green Chemistry

Jammu, December 3: A two day national level conference on Green Chemistry: Newer Challenges and Sustainable Development sponsored by the UGC was inaugurated at Govt. Degree College, Udhampur in which Tanveer Jahan, Commissioner Secretary to Govt. Dept. of Higher Education was the chief guest whereas Dr. Sham Lal Gupta, Director Colleges presided over the function.
Chief Guest congratulated the college for taking a lead in organizing an event on Green Chemistry. Emphasizing the role of students, she said that such programmes do contribute not only to generate knowledge but also to enhance confidence among the youth. The colleges can serve a potent platform to discuss contemporary issues and spread awareness, she said.
Dr. Gupta said that knowledge should not only be generated but also diversified. Colleges should use the opportunities available to them for organizing such events with an optimum involvement of students. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Rajeev Gupta, Professor of Chemistry and Dean Faculty of Science, Jammu University. Tracing the development of the concept of Green Chemistry since Sir Paul Anastas, he said that it is better to prevent waste generation and pollution rather than later on taking measures to control it.
Earlier the programme began with the lighting of the traditional lamp followed by welcome address by the Principal, Dr. N. K. Resutra. He outlined various innovative programmes and development projects taken up by the college during its Golden Jubilee year.
Prof. Kewal Kumar, organizing secretary gave details of the conference and threw light on the topic. A souvenir of abstracts of the papers to be presented was also released on this occasion. Other dignitaries including Prof.Paresh L. Dhepe from NCL Pune, Prof.Sadhna Gupta, Principal GCW Udhampur, Dr.A.S.Rishi, Sh.Vikram Kumar from K.V. Udhampur, District Officers, School Principals and members of civil society. Prof. Kusam Gupta, the convener proposed formal vote of thanks. Prof. Shreya Bakshi conducted the proceedings.
