Race for MLC seat picks up in Poonch | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Dec 4:Poonch based politicians belonging to the ruling coalition partners have geared up their campaign for a single reserved seat in upper house of state assembly. The local leaders belonging to both Congress and National Conference have started maneuvering. The seat in discussion, presently represented by Mohammad Rashid Qureshi of National Conference is falling vacant in the near future for which the political leaders of the district are lobbying hard with in their respective parties. Qureshi was nominated on this seat five years ago after J and K High court had given a decision in his favor following his writ petition against then PDP nominee Master Tassaduq Hussain of Rajouri district. Qureshi had challenged the nomination of Tassaduq on the grounds that later belonged to district Rajouri while the said seat was reserved for Poonch district only. There are about half a dozen aspirants for the said seat including two sitting MLCs like Rashid Qureshi of NC and Mir Jehangir of Congress because both of the sitting members are about to complete their earlier term. Though, it is yet to be decided by the coalition partners that which party will field its candidate on this seat as per their power sharing agreement. Beside present MLC Rashid Qureshi, there are five aspirants in the district including Moulana Sayed of Poonch, Shah Mohammad Tantray of Poonch and Dr Shehnaz Ganai of Haveli Tehsil while Chowdhary Walidad of Mendhar tehsil and Mohammad Ayoub Shabnum of Surankote are also in fray. The Congress party has also two front runner aspirants for this seat like Mir Jhangir and former MLC Ch Lal Mohammad Sabir. In National Conference, sources said, Qureshi is at number one in the race as he has created a very good rapport and space among party leaders due to his performance in the house in his on going term and is being supported by some top faces of the party. However, party is now in fix as it has already promised a seat to two workers of the district in the previous assembly election like Shah Mohammad Tantray and Moulana Sayed who played a major role for the victory of the party candidate in 2008 assembly elections. As per another party worker of Mendhar tehsil, Ch. Walidad also claims that he was promised the seat in legislative council in 2008 assembly election. “I hope party will consider me this time because it has been promised to me at that time” he told this correspondent. Similarly, Shah Mohammad Tantray was also promised same by the party and he was asked to make the success of the party candidate . In such circumstances, it will be very difficult for the party to decide the candidature on this seat and this can lead to the split in the local unit of the party in the district. However, Congress party has lessproblem as it has only few candidates in the queue of aspirants. Though the coalition partners have not taken any decision on this matter so far, however, observers is of the opinion that if Congress makes its claims on the seat it will add more problems for the later as it was already in trouble due to lobbying in the local unit of the party for this seat.
