Panchayat voter lists being announced on Jan 4 | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 3: Long pending demand of the people of the state for holding local bodies' elections is going to be fulfilled in January next year. If things will remain smooth, final list of eligible voters will be announced on January 4 by the Chief Electoral Officer of the state. Panchayat and local bodies' polls were earlier scheduled to be held in spring this year. Pertinently Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) have been postponed due to various reasons including the ongoing unrest in the Valley. Chief Minister of the state Omar Abdullah intended to hold non-party Panchayat Elections from January 2011 and laid stress on large scale zarticipation of men and women to elect the right candidates as their representatives. He said in a public rally in Reasi few days ago that the transfer of power to public representatives at Panchayat level would also ensures proper and justified spending of allocations and creation of required public assets. State has 2,700 panchayats, of which elections of about 1,900 Panchayats were held in year 2001. Holding elections would help to secure additional funds from the Centre which would go a long way in alleviating poverty and improving the socio-economic conditions of the people of rural areas. Director, Rural Development M Y Zargar said they were fully prepared for upcoming Panchayat elections. He also said that Chief Electoral Officer would declare the final list of voters who are going to participate in the upcoming Panchayat elections.
