DGP for expanding scope of Civil Defence

Jammu, December 04 - Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda, who is also Director Civil Defence has called for major initiative to train and acquaint youngsters on civil defence mechanism to meet challenges in exigencies and natural calamities.
He was speaking at inaugural ceremony of 5th Civil Defence Conference-2010 held at Home-guard and Civil Defence Headquarters here today.
Addressing the conference, Khoda said that awareness on preventive measures should constitute significant component of civil defence mechanism and sense of commitment is imperative for success of such initiative. He stressed on engagement of more volunteers from the local populace of districts, tehsils, remote and far-flung areas to aware the people about disaster management. He said that utilization of funds should be made properly for strengthening civil defence mechanism in the State. He added that the campaign must not remain restricted in urban and semi urban areas but should be extended to remote pockets as well.
Lauding the role of State Civil Defence Organization during exigency particularly in the recent cloud burst in Leh, the DGP said that the department should organise more training camps at different levels to acquaint the volunteers about rapid actions to be taken in such situations. He said that the volunteers of civil defence, wardens, officials associated with the organisation always remain on forefront during crises situations.
Khoda stressed upon the organizers and participants to come up with their valuable suggestions and proposals which could help in strengthening the civil defence organization in the State. He said every support will be provided to the organization to make it more effective and expand its operational orbit.
Earlier, the Additional Director General of Police, Home-guards/Civil Defence and Auxiliary Police, Gopal Reddy gave a detailed power point presentation about the aims and objectives of the Conference. He threw light on civil defence activities and the measures to be adopted during the disasters whether natural or man-made. He informed the participants about the steps being devised by the State government in containing the damages during such calamities.
He said that state government has earmarked two Coys of Auxiliary Police as State Disaster Response Force at Zonal level to deal with the situation during any disaster. These Coys have been fully equipped and trained, he added. He said that more than 4,000 volunteers have been imparted training during the current year and our efforts will continue to train more and more volunteers.
During the conference, several speakers gave a series of lectures on the role of civil defence in times of natural calamities. In the day long Conference, detailed question answer session was held in which several points were raised and discussed.
Among others, the conference was attended by Additional Directors General of Police, K. Raiendra Kumar and Ram Lubhaya, Inspectors General of Police, Naveen Aggerwal, Raja Aijaz Ali, Sheikh Owais Ahmed, A. K. Gupta, Dr. B. Srinivas, Ravinder Kotwal and H. K. Lohia, AIG (Personnel), N. D. Wani, AIG (P/T), Ali Mohammad, senior police officers, Chief Wardens and Wardens of civil defence organization from all over the State.
