Lack of awareness of laws widens gulf between Police-Public
11/4/2006 11:34:45 PM

Jammu Nov | 4
Lack of awareness among the common masses about the Police laws many a times create a nuisance among the police and people resulting into widening of gulf between two parties as well as strain police- public relations.
So far as functioning of Police and Judiciary are concerned, during prosecution, every case is treated in accordance with a specific Act. So police has to select the Act meticulously while filing the charge sheets. But on the other hand people are not aware of laws, which gives birth to confusion and at some times leads to conflicts also.
As per the information, 307 RPC is put into action when intention of the convict appears to be of murder (having used some weapon) because of some old rivalry. But in the absence of these norms and rules, people insist police to use this special act even in some minor conflicts.
Section 323 RPC is used against the accused where he/she is found guilty of attacking some one with bare hands or stick. Similarly, section 341 RPC is used against the person for obstructing the way while section 325 RPC is used against the person who inflicts grave injures to the victim and section 326 RPC in case of bone fracture during the conflict. If the victim produces medical certificate, it adds value as it helps during the investigation of case.
Under section 307 RPC, Court can award sentence of seven to ten years to the accused.
In some cases even police had to acquit several accused on bail.
To create awareness among the people about the laws, the Ramban police have launched a campaign in the district to remove the misgiving among the people about applications of laws. As a part of the campaign, the Police has made a beginning from the students who in turn would help to educate their family members about the niceties of law being enforced by the Police for preventing crimes of different nature. As per the schedule of the campaign students can visit any nearby police station twice a week to learn about the police laws directly from the police officials
