Factors that may have gone against granting visa to Musharraf | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 4: He had never hoped that India will not issue a visa in his favour. But his hopes have been "dashed to the ground" after he was informally conveyed that India was not going to give visa to him. This is the tale of former Pakistan President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, who had been invited to a seminar to be held in Delhi. Musharraf had never imagined that he will not get an Indian visa. He does not agree that India has denied the visa because of "my being the architect of the Kargil conflict." He has stated that had Kargil been the reason for India to reject issuance of a visa he would not have been allowed to come in 1999,2005 and 2009. The former military ruler does not know the exact reason which motivated India to deny visa to him. But inside reports said that a number of factors were responsible for it. First, when the Zardari led Government, reports said, came to know that Musharraf had been invited to a seminar that was being held in New Delhi a word was conveyed to the union Government that it should not issue any visa to Musharraf. India did not want to ignore this request because it did not want to further soil the strained relations it has with Pakistan. New Delhi ,these reports said, did not want to create a situation of the pattern of the Dalai Lama's asylum in India. No doubt Gen. Musharraf was not seeking any asylum still Delhi did not want to annoy Islamabad. Islamabad was against Musharraf's visit to India as it had fears that the former President, who has floated a political party, would use the platform in Delhi for fulminating against the Zardari led regime. Secondly, Delhi had been pinched hard when Musharraf recently alleged that India was trying to build an anti-Pakistan state in Afghanistan. He had gone to the extent of blaming the consulates in Kandahar and Jalalabad for creating trouble for Pakistan. Thirdly, the Congress led UPA Government is being blamed for having adopted soft policy towards Pakistan and granting visa to Musharraf could have been exploited by the opposition parties. One of these three factors should have motivated New Delhi against granting visa to Gen. Musharraf otherwise there should have been no logic behind the denial of the visa when the same Musharraf had been allowed to visit India on three occasions. When he visited India in 1999 or 2005 he was the head of the state. And those who suspect that Musharraf was not given the visa because he was no longer the President of Pakistan are wrong. Musharraf had visited India in 2009 to attend India Today's enclave. It seems that Delhi does not see any possibility for Gen. Musharraf to regain power in the immediate future and hence the Congress led UPA Government does not want to cause added strains in its relations with Islamabad if it granted visa to Musharraf. And Musharraf feels hurt. This is evident by the way he has announced he would never visit India. |
