CM angers Nagrota locals, tours without Ajatshatru | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 4: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's whirlwind tour of Nagrota constituency has not gone well with the royal family of Jammu whose son Ajatshatru Singh once represented this constituency and had also unsuccessfully contested last Assembly elections. Locals here are angry over Omar's purported neglect of Ajatshatru while touring Nagrota constituency. They are against any move of National Conference to introduce new candidate in this high profile constituency. They want the Chief Minister to realize the mistake he made during the last assembly elections wherein he had angered the public by leaving an election rally in a fit of rage. Though the constituency is being represented by BJP leader Jugal Kishore but locals maintain that Ajatshatru still enjoys trust and goodwill of the vast majority of people living in Nagrota constituency. They were taken by surprise when they saw Omar touring the constituency without Ajatshatru. Locals affirm that National Conference has always taken their constituency for granted and field candidates without assessing their credibility and winning capacity. Locals assert that Ajatshatru after losing the assembly elections in the year 2009 has been working hard to gain the lost ground. They maintain that if NC chooses to ignore Ajatshatru, it would be catastrophic. "We are not against anyone. But we have seen Ajatshatru working overnight to undo what had gone wrong during the last assembly elections," locals said. They maintained that Ajatshatru would have managed to win last assembly elections held immediately after the 2008-Amarnath land row if the voters would not have voted along the communal lines. They said that NC has become more a party of corporates and is no more a party of workers and loyalists. "We would resist every move to replace Ajatshatru with any other candidate from this constituency. Even then, if the party ignores our aspirations, it would not be good for the party," locals warned. Omar may have chosen the occasion to launch one of his close friends in the constituency but the move has angered the general public and created an impression that Omar and his father Farooq Abdullah are not on the same page. While the son has plans to introduce fresh faces, father is still backing experienced lot in the party. Who would prevail in this battle is to be seen but ignoring Ajatshatru in Nagrota constituency is likely to impact NC in the coming days. |
