DGP needs to do some damage control | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 4: Notwithstanding Director General's police-people contact programme, the relation between the civilians and the men in uniform is fast deteriorating. An incident at Batmaloo must serve as an eye opener to the DGP. According to reports, a youth suspected a man in civvies of being a police man in New Colony Batmaloo this morning. Immediately he called his friends. The man in civvies was grabbed and frisked. An identity card recovered from his person confirmed the youth's suspicion. The police man was beaten to pulp. He was later rescued by the police. The incident triggered violent clashes in the area for quite some time. The youth pelted stones and raised slogans against the police. This is the second incident of its kind in the area. Angered by the Bemina incident where a police man pulled the headgear of a woman seeking release of their relatives a few months ago, the people of Batmaloo urged the police men to vacate from their rented rooms. The public resentment witnessed shifting of scores of police families from the area. The police have been at the receiving end during the on-going agitation. The stone pelters have given a tough time to the men in uniform. The `fight' against the police force took a new turn in August when angry mobs started attacking the police stations and police posts across Kashmir. According to an NDTV report, twelve police stations and posts were attacked and ransacked. Some of the police stations have been set ablaze. The news channel while describing it (attack on police posts) a disturbing trend said the police men were scared of venturing out in troubled areas. They come out in civvies and do not carry their identity cards along. The leader of opposition in Parliament, LK Advani took the government to task for `mishandling' Kashmir situation. Quoting a senior police officer of the state, he said the police had never faced such difficult times in Kashmir. The incumbent DGP has been trying in vain to improve police-people relations by holding meets across Kashmir. However, policing the police, concerned people believe, has become necessary. The sooner it happens the better. |
