Adhere to Naini’s recipe to fight obesity | | | Vaibhavi Chandel Early times report Jammu Dec 05 Obesity has emerged as one of the biggest problem being faced by the society. Every one wants to be in shape but the hectic schedule and the erratic lifestyles leave no space for them to take care of themselves. Like the western countries, or elsewhere in the country, obesity among children has emerged as a matter of grave concern for parents in Jammu as well. As is commonly known that obesity is caused due to intake of more energy than its usage, the primary cause among children is also consumption of junk food, spending long hours watching television or working on computers, comfortable living standard and movement along with parents on bikes or smaller vehicles etc. Leisurely lifestyle, stress, marginal physical activity and nuclear family culture are the main factors responsible for obesity in children. Eating habits, especially among the younger generation is fast changing. The restaurant culture and the growing number of eating points in the city clearly depict that eating in restaurants and readymade food is the preferred choice of the younger generation. The scenario has so transformed that at every mile, one can see big and cosy restaurants, serving wide range of eatable from the typical Indian food to the Italian, Chinese, Continental etc…, now these eating points serve you with everything and that is the reason people prefer eating outdoors. Tibetan Mumos are the latest craze among youngsters. In the city of Jammu, there has been a growing trend of families spending lesser time outdoors or allowing kids to move around independently for the fear of vulnerable roads, insecure parks and criminality in public places, even in sports fields. To sum up, it can be said that obesity is rising because children are spending too much leisure time on low-energy pastimes, such as watching TV and playing computer games. Thanks to the television programmes, newspaper articles and group discussions that have been taking place quite frequently, this alarming aspect of child development has elicited the attention of parents. “Most of children prefer junk food over chapatti and vegetables or other home prepared food stuff. Children prefer to take Noodles or Maggi with them for lunch in school. Mostly children like junk food and that is the main reason for the increase in obesity in children,” says Rashmi Raina, working with IT sector. In this gloomy scenario, there is silver lining too... growing number of parents now take proper care of the diet of their children. “I never compromise with the diet of my children. Though being a working women, it’s a bit difficult to maintain the things yet I tend to keep a calendar and try to abide by it. I mostly prefer to prepare food at home, because homemade food is hygienic and even you can also maintain a proper diet chart of your family especially for children. Mostly I take my children along with me for a walk in evenings. This has been helping lot in maintaining their fitness. However, there is need for a tight exercise schedule also if they have to sustain this fitness”, says Disha Chouhan, an educationalist. “Children mostly study in air-conditioned classrooms, use elevators to reach libraries or dining halls. Even in sports they prefer indoor games. Mostly children love to play computer games. So there is no scope for the children to burn extra calories which is the main reason of the increased cases of the obesity among children”, she adds. “Working schedules are quite hectic. But there is only mental exercise, no physical exercise and that is leading to the increased rate of obesity cases. Moreover eating habits are not proper. Mostly children, before going to school, won’t eat anything; then carry lunch, which they hardly partake. In the evenings they prefer junk stuff to have a fill. Where is the nutritious diet”, she rues, while emphasizing that if the Naini Ma’s recipe is adhered to, the obesity will certainly go.
