12/5/2010 10:07:16 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 5: Corruption is a huge curse for our Society and there is need to fight with this evil to save our society. ‘Right to Information (RTI) Act’ can prove to be one of the weapons to fight this evil of corruption.
This was stated by Dr Permendra Singh, a senior member of Kshitij Foundation – ‘a Non Governmental Organization’, on the occasion of farmers’ awareness programme-cum-workshop on RTI Act organized by the NGO at Sarore village of district Samba.
He made the farmers aware about RTI act and its utility. According to Dr Singh most of people especially our farmers are not aware of the RTI act and further stressed that the same should properly be utilized by each and every citizen in order to erase the injustice and corruption prevailing in our society. Using this right we being the citizen of India can monitor the proceedings of any government organization (with some exceptions). Therefore any citizen can get the information about any government office/ division/ programme (except defence, security related matters) within 30 days.
He also discussed in detail on technical aspects of RTI and said that this act is implemented in whole country as well as in Jammu & Kashmir, whereas there are some drawbacks related to RTI act implication in Jammu & Kashmir. On this occasion, he appealed the government of Jammu & Kashmir to overcome these drawbacks (Appointment of chief information commissioner in the state without any delay, reduction of the prescribe fees for RTI from Rs 50 to Rs 10 as is in all other states of the country). Dr Singh further added that there is a great need of launching a website through which the various aspects of RTI can be explored. He said that the object of Kshitij foundation is to aware the people about the RTI in the state and to help the people of the state to use this act for their common right.
Literatures related to RTI were also distributed among the farmers during the programme.
