Kashmir freezes, Drass coldest with -19 deg C

Srinagar, Dec 5: The Kashmir valley and nearby regions reeled under intense cold as the mercury plummeted in the state while Drass recorded the lowest minimum temperature of minus 19 degrees Celsius. Srinagar, the summer capital, witnessed the coldest night of the season after mercury dipped further to minus 2.6degrees. Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia on Srinagar-Leh national highway witnessed the coldest night in the region after the minimum dipped to minus 19 degrees.
The highway from Sonamarg on this side of the Zojila pass to Drass has already been closed from December 1 due to slippery road conditions.
The state and the Central governments have already approved construction of a tunnel at Zojila pass to make it an all-weather road, which connects the Ladakh region with the rest of the state.
A weather office spokesman said here this morning Leh recorded minus 12 degrees minimum temperature while Kargil minus 11. The temperature in the upper reaches of the region was between minus 20 to minus 35 degrees. Srinagar recorded minus 2.6 minimum temperature, the coldest of the season so far.
At several places, water taps were frozen and people were seen defreezing them by burning wood.
Health resort of Pahalgam, also the base camp of the holy Amarnath cave in south Kashmir Himalayas recorded minus 4.5 degree minimum, freezing waters on the upper reaches which has resulted in further drop in the water level of Lidder River.
Gulmarg, the world famous ski resort of north Kashmir, recorded minus 4.2 degree.
The Tourism department has already prepared a plan to host a number of skiing courses and competitions this winter.
Kupwara, recorded minus 3.1 followed by Qazigund minus 3 degree on Srinagar-Jammu highway.
The Western Disturbances (WD), originating from Arabian sea and entering the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, were active in the region but were very weak.
The weather will remain dry during the next 24 hours, a Met official said, adding, there could be some rain or light snowfall on the upper reaches.
