EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 5: In what can create furore in the political circles of the state and within the Congress in particular, senior party leader and Health Minister in Omar Abdullah led coalition in the state today raised pitch on the lines of opposition BJP, saying in the backdrop of continued discrimination with Jammu, the only realistic option was to grant statehood to this region. Drawing political comparisons, he said if the talk of self rule of autonomy are getting louder for Kashmir , there should be separate state for Jammu and UT status for Ladakh region.
“I seek the attention of the party leadership towards how Jammu and its people are being made to suffer……..there has certainly be Kashmir centric approach over the years on all matters and Jammu has been ignored on all fronts……but we need to come out of this syndrome to give justice to Jammu”, the Health Minister said while pointing towards state PCC chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz present in the public rally at Bani. We need to shun this approach and pay attention to other regions too, Sharma who is also Horticulture minister said in emotive outburst, while outline the fronts where Jammu has been facing discrimination.
“If we look at the things, there is certainly regional imbalance on many fronts which needs to addressed……..instead the talk about autonomy and self rule for Kashmir is getting louder……..before granting greater autonomy for Kashmir, there is need to first address the issue of regional autonomy”, Sharma said emphasizing that separate statehood was in that context only option for Jammu to get is due.
The Congress Minister, while giving instances contended that this had become imperative in the wake of the fact that Jammu had been denied its share and the major share goes to Kashmir. “The need of the hour is to ask for Jammu share and get it rightfully so….”, Sharma said in the rally which was attended by other party ministers a s well. “This is the only alternative to ensure peace and parity in all the three regions……I appeal to you to consider this viewpoint”, Sharma said while pointing towards the PCC Chief.

However, Prof Soz, is said to have declined this, contending that the policy of the Congress party was to unite the state and keep all the three regions as one united unit. Therefore, it was not proper to ask for statehood for Jammu even if it comes as personal viewpoint of any leader, the PCC chief maintained. The senior Congress leaders and ministers along with the PCC chief are currently on tour of far off areas of Bani and Basohli to take assessment of the situation and problems being faced by the people.
