Conditions not conducive for panchayat polls: Mehbooba | | | early times report Jammu, Dec 5: The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today announced that the conditions are not conducive for holding the Panchayat elections likely to be held on non-party basis in January next year in the state. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti was addressing a meeting of party workers in Jammu today. She said that the conditions are not conducive for holding of panchayat polls, hence the party will oppose the polls. Lambasting the Omar-led government, the PDP president said that it was not the right time to hold elections and said, ''117 people lost their lives, people suffered crores of damage and many are still behind barracks, then how the government can give priority to Panchayat Polls at this juncture.'' ''Presently the Government should reach out to the people, who have lost their loved ones, and the present situation suits National Conference (NC) because there is anger and hatred among people and if the government has announced the elections on non-party basis, PDP has no role to play,'' Mehbooba said. The PDP president said that the irony is that the failures have made the government both complacent and arrogant. To sustain on these negative attitude has become the hall mark of those at the helm and they shamefully compromising the prestigious of institutions. The absence of transparency and accountability in the administration speaks volume about government's intention to thrive on miseries of the people. ``Even if the government wants hold the polls, let they do. Because we know it will not be held in a transparent way and they will indulge into rigging to win the polls. The PDP is only opposing the polls keeping in view the present scenario as well as the weather conditions as many parts of the state are reeling under sub-zero temperatures and cannot participate in polls, '' she added. Drawing a comparison of present dispensation with the earlier coalition, she said that besides transparency, the equitable share of resources and better management by the later has brought the state out from the morass. Unfortunately the good work has been undone now, she added. Mehbooba said that if this drift continued the people of the state will lose faith in democratic means for redressal as is evident from the on going unrest in Kashmir Valley. Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today asked government to implement 8-point recommendations first and then proceed further with such visits and interactions. ''We do not oppose the visit of the delegation but the government should first implement the 8-points recommendations given by the Union Home Minister,'' Mehbooba told reporters at the sidelines of a party function. She said that all such visits are futile adding, ''all party delegation headed by the Union Minister P Chidambram after reviewing situation in Jammu and Kashmir submitted its report to the Centre but till date no action has been taken.'' The PDP leader said that one of the recommendations comprising release of all prisoners (not militants) has also not be considered adding, ''the government is not even setting free those who have been released by the Court.''Terming 'Rehabilitation Policy' a fluke, she said, ''on one hand the government has failed in securing the youth in Kashmir and simultaneously, they are inviting those who crossed over to Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK)-it is useless.''
