Ladakh cancels Losar celebrations | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Ramzan Khan LEH, DEC 6: Revered Ladakhi festival “Losar” which marks beginning of New Year for Buddhists was not celebrated as a mark of respect and solidarity for those who lost their lives during the last year’s devastating flood which left hundreds dead and thousands shelter-less. Ladakh Buddhist Association announced through different mediums that this year people of Ladakh will not celebrate Losar. People preferred not to wish each other on this occasion. Likewise, Muslims in Leh also declared not to celebrate Eid with much funfair. Instead of putting their money in celebrating these festivals, people preferred to donate money for flood victims. According the Ladakhi and Tibetan calendar, new year generally begins in the months of march of Gagarin calendar but it was during the reign of Gyalpo(King) Jamyang Namgyal that Losar, Ladakhi new year used to be celebrated few months in advance. Reason behind the change of date for New Year is that the Gyalpo Jamyang Namgyal was about to leave for war with ‘Balti’ of Baltistan and he decided to celebrate festival of Losar in advance.
