IAF airlifts stranded passengers after closure of highway to Ladakh | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Decemer 6 The first flight of the "Kargil Courier" of the Indian Air Force (IAF) today airlifted stranded passengers at Kargil and Srinagar following the closure of the National Highway connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the State from December 1. Aamir Ali, Officer on Special Duty (ODS) in the office of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, said the authorities had arranged for the service in view of the closure of the highway because of snowfall at Zojila. The first flight was operated today with an IAF AN-32 aircraft, with 21 passengers airlifted to Sringar and 19 carried to Kargil on the return journey. The State and the Centre have already agreed to construct a tunnel at Zojila pass to make it an all weather road. The flights will operate thrice a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between Kargil and Srinagar and once a week, on Tuesdays, between Kargil and Jammu.
