Sham now 'shifts' his guns towards NC
'Addressing discrimination must for running coalition smoothly'
12/7/2010 11:38:13 PM
ET Report
jammu, Dec 7: Stirring the hornets nest, senior Congress leader and Health minister in state government Sham Lal Sharma, who advocated statehood for Jammu two days back has now shifted his 'guns' towards senior NC leader Dr Mustafa Kamal, contending it is the provocation of latter's statements against Congress command that prompted him to speak on these lines. Even as this is being seen purely as 'tactics' to shift the contours of the controversy in order to escape the 'wrath' of own party, the political corridors are ripe with rumours that 'blame game statements' from senior leaders of both allies may lead to fissures within the coalition.
In his clarification issued to the media today, Sham Lal has conveniently attributed what he stated in Bani two days back to what Dr Mustafa Kamal, NC MLA and younger brother of former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah has been saying against Congress party in general and High command in particular for a long time. "Dr Kamal has been continuously pouring out venom against Congress party and its High Command……he has also been rejecting the genuine concerns of Jammu province……..", the Health Minister said, pointing fingers towards NC, indicating clearly that whatever he said was actually an outburst against NC.
The statement issued today, interestingly, more than clarification, is loaded with ambiguity as Sham Lal sharma has tried to relate his statement on statehood for Jammu to a mix of things- first, that he has been spitting venom against Congress High Command ……. Has been making controversial statements against Congress party despite being a leader of the ruling party of which Congress is the main ally…….that such statements would not augur well for smooth running of the coalition etc etc. One understands the anger and resentment of Sharma against Dr Kamal for speaking out continuously against the Congress but one fails to understand how he attributes and relates to what he stated at Bani.
However, in a very 'simplistic' manner senior Congress leader has very well tried to mix the two aspects. In his clarification he contends that it was in this background he made a 'strong plea' to the party High Command that efforts were needed for running coalition effectively and smoothly and this according to Health Minister can happen only when there is no room for discrimination and the aspirations of all the three regions will be respected. Sham Lal has also clarified that through his Bani statement he has tried to caution all those who matter that if this principle was not adhered to, the forces advocating UT status for Ladakh, statehood for Jammu and autonomous Kashmir will gain momentum. "I said this to make leaders conscious how best the interests of three regions can be best safeguarded…..", the clarification further said.
The political twist of the statement is worth appreciation. But sources within the party have it to say that the clarification, in which he has tried to move his guns towards NC is mainly to escape the wrath of his own party, wherefrom Sharma is facing severe criticism.
