| 5 killed, 3 hurt in road mishaps | | | Early Times Report
Jammu/katra, Dec 7: Five persons, including a Vaishnodevi pilgrim and an army jawan, were killed and three others hurt in different road mishaps here since last night.
A Scorpio jeep (JK02X/9114) skidded off the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and fell into an over 1,500 ft deep gorge at Nera in Ramban at about 8 am today, resulting in the instant death of its driver.
Police sources identified the dead as Insaf Ali, son of Qurban Ali of Chanderkot.
Meanwhile, Surjeet Kumar (22), son of Sham Lal of Mananu, Samba, was this morning going on scooter (JK02H/0688) to drop his minor son Amit at a playway school in the area when a speeding truck (JK18/0375) hit him from behind.
While Surjeet was killed on the spot, Amit survived with minor wounds. The truck driver was apprehended by locals and handed over to police.
Another incident took place late last night near Paloura on the Lower Akhnoor road when Kartik Koul, son of Avtar Koul of Toph Sherkhania, was returning home on his motorcycle from a marriage function.
Sources said Kartik's mobike hit a roadside parapet as a result of which he and his relative Sukhamvar, daughter Shahji Dhar, sustained severe injuries.
They were evacuated by police to GMC hospital where the girl was pronounced brought dead by the doctors. She had come from Delhi to attend the marriage function. Kartik's condition was stated to be serious.
Devi Dutta (70) was last night on his way to the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi in the Trikuta Hills when a minibus (JK14A/5063) hit him in Katra town, the base camp of the shrine, as a result of which he was killed. He hailed from Ludhiana.
The minibus driver Shiv Kumar was arrested by Katra police. Signalman Tata Babu Csokkakula of Andhra Pradesh was killed and sepoy Manoj K Pradhan injured critically when a truck, they were travelling in, plunged into a deep gorge after being hit by a civil truck near Kela Morh in Ramban. |
