Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 7: Besides setting an example of good governance, the former Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayed has the distinction of taking the state towards normalcy. This stands proved by the number of tourists that visited the state during his regime.
In 2004, according to official sources, 69.21 lakh tourists visited the state. This includes 7.67 lakh tourists who visited the valley and 61.45 lakh pilgrim-tourists coming to Mata Vaishno Devi Ji Shrine.
With the improvement in the security situation, sources said a favourable atmosphere for investment in the industrial sector was created. In the first two years of Mufti's rule proposals for investment of Rs. 2500 crores were approved and most of these projects are now in place.
Sources said the production of food crops, which occupy a major portion of the cultivated land, in Jammu & Kashmir was recorded during 1999-2000 to 2002-2003 at a lower level than the peak level achieved in 1998-99.
"However, the production reached another peak in 2003-04", they said. Significantly the production of Horticulture produce also went up during his rule.
Sayeed also undertook construction of the Mughal Road in 2003. The project initiated by Sher-e-Kashmir was abandoned by Dr Farooq's regime for unknown reasons. The project, people believe, shall go a long way to boost the economy of Poonch, Rajouri, Pulwama and Shopian districts. .
Mufti also undertook four-lanning of Gallander-Shopian road. The fly-over project from New Secretariat to Budshah Bridge in the summer capital was shelved by the National Conference regime. However, Mufti took up the project and completed it within record time. The fly-over has eased traffic congestion in the area top a large extent.
Projects were also been approved for up gradation of Pulwama-Tahab-Litter-Sangam and Pulwama-Tahab-Chakoora-Sangam roads.
Mufti paid special attention to the education sector. The Islamic University at Awantipora, Pulwama was established. "A degree college for women was sanctioned for Pulwama. A polytechnic was also approved for the district", sources said.
And last but not the least, Mufti scored a point at the political front as well. He did not remain indifferent to the woes of divided families. The Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service started in his regime and the divided families of the state heaved a sigh of relief. Poonch-Rawalakote road also opened.
