Repair work on vandalised J-K Clock Tower begins | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Dec 8: Three months after 'Ghanta Ghar' (clock tower) was vandalised by a group of protestors, Jammu and Kashmir authorities on Wednesday began repair and restoration work on it at the historic Lal Chowk. The Clock Tower was damaged on September 11 when moderate Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq held a rally at Lal Chowk. Thousands of people had gathered at the Clock Tower for the rally, held soon after Eidul Fitr prayers, and a section of the crowd started climbing atop the tower to hoist green flags. In the process, the tower, which was refurbished and given a modern look just a few months earlier, was totally vandalised. Located in the midst of Lal Chowk, which has witnessed several historic moments, including speeches by first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi, the tower was earlier damaged during 2008 Amarnath land row agitation. It also bore the brunt of mob violence at the eruption of militancy in 1990. A security forces bunker was constructed at the base of the tower to prevent any damage to it. However, the picket was removed in 2007 following improvement in security scenario in the city.
