| Alternative dispute resolution may clear backlog: CJI | | | Kochi, Nov 5 Alternative dispute resolution mechanisms like mediation, arbitration and reconciliation will help clear the backlog of cases pending in courts across the country, Chief Justice of India Y K Sabharwal said today. Participating in the valedictory function of the four-day golden jubilee celebrations of the Kerala High Court here, he said alternative dispute resolution mechanisms were the sheet anchor of the judicial system, but could be implemented only with the support of bar members. He also pointed out the need for encouraging and motivating the new generation to join the legal profession by acquainting them with traditions and providing them financial assistance. To encourage the new generation to join the profession, the Kerala government should follow the steps taken by neighbouring Karnataka, where for some time the state government has been giving monthly stipends to lawyers, he said. "When we talk of valedictory, it is a farewell of what we did and how we celebrated, but it is also a new beginning to make new resolves, to fix a new mission and a new target," he said. Complimenting the state judiciary, he said Kerala had a commendable track record in the liquidation of arrears and reducing pendency of cases. However, he added that Kerala could not be complacent as about 10 lakh cases are still pending in subordinate courts. |
