Smokers caught, fined

Srinagar, Dec 8: Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Asgar Hassan Samoon received numerous complaints that tobacco products were being sold outside educational institutions, in violation of Section 6(b) of cigarettes & other tobacco products (Prohibition of Advertisement & Regulation of Trade & Commerce, Production, Supply & Distribution) Act 2003 (COTPA) which puts a ban on sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions.
Div Com constituted a special anti tobacco squad which conducted raids at various places in Srinagar city.
An amount of Rs 1000/- was recovered as fine from the vendors selling cigarettes outside Tyndale Biscoe School, Rs 200 from vendors outside Burnhall school.
In addition Rs. 1100 was recovered as fine from people smoking in public places in violation of section 4 of COTPA which prohibits smoking in public places.
The places inspected included GB Panth Hospital, Chest Disease Hospital, Directorate of School Education.
