12/8/2010 8:59:41 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 8: Panun Kashmir views the selective stoppage of government advertisements to the daily newspaper Early Times by the State government with concern and deep sense of outrage. The means adopted by the state government border on frank intimidation perhaps to force the newspaper to change its editorial line in accordance with the wishes of the government, it said.
The issue of selective stoppage of advertisements by the government seems to be a ploy to restrict the freedom of expression in the state particularly the freedom of media to report, comment and analyze the issues of public importance.
Panun Kashmir has been keenly observing the attitude of the state government particularly while dealing with the media in the state.
While the government has chosen to ignore the seditious and communal reporting by the press in the Kashmir valley, it has many times acted to intimidate and coerce dissenting newspaper groups in Jammu who have upheld norms ethical journalism and also fiercely defended their right to report and analyze the happenings on the ground.
Panun Kashmir appeals to all freedom loving people of the state and the organs of the society to condemn the approach of the government to coerce the free opinion in the state with an objective of making it to conform to the dictates of the government.
Panun Kashmir urges the government to relook into its policy vis-à-vis media in the state and adopt not only an unbiased approach but also realize that restrictions imposed on the media in whatever form eventually are self-defeating.
