7 months after AI's Kashmir visit | ‘They forgot to release report on PSA’ | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 8: The Amnesty International (AI) has delayed release of its report on use and abuse of Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu Kashmir for unknown reasons. The report was expected after three months of AI's Kashmir visit which started on May 17 this year. A two member team of the Amnesty International arrived in the summer capital on May 17 to take stock of the human rights situation in Kashmir. The team comprised of two Indian born London based Indians who represent the Indian team in the south Asian chapter of the organization Immediately after their arrival in Srinagar, the team members Ramesh Gopal Krishnan and Bikramjeet Batra called on separatists and civil society groups. In a week, the team held around fifty meetings. The team also called on the Chief Minister at his Gupkar residence. Surprisingly Omar justified Public Safety Act (PSA) saying it was needed to protect and govern the state smoothly. Omar evaded answer when told about re-arrest of detainees outside the jails after their release on court directions. He , however, reaffirmed his commitment to human rights. "We are serious about human rights and a lot of work has been done to minimize abuse of rights", he said. Talking to Early Times, the team hoped to release the report within six months. However, the report has been withheld for reasons best known to the AI. The delay in release of the report has evoked criticism from concerned quarters. According to a human rights defender, the delay in release of report would tell upon the credibility of the "prestigious organization" The Amnesty team was allowed for the first time in twenty years to visit Kashmir. Most of the separatists and human rights defenders welcomed the development. However, Syed Ali Geelani has expressed serious reservations about the Amnesty visit. |
