Omar breaks silence over Sham's remarks, assures action | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 8: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah finally broke his silence over the controversial statement of his cabinet minister Sham Lal Sharma, who said that the state should be trifurcated for all round development of Jammu and Ladakh regions which he alleged are continuously being discriminated over the last more than 60 years. Clearing coalition government's stand on Minister for Health Sham Lal's controversial statement, Omar Abdullah here today said that whatever has to be done will be done but only after scrutinizing Minister's remarks by the 'appropriate quarters'. Though Omar did not elaborate much on the 'appropriate quarters', the Chief Minister's remark was enough to indicate that he has already in touch with the Congress high command over the issue and is waiting for a response from its ally. Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a function organised at Wazir Janki Nath Memorial School, Abdullah said, "Investigation is under progress and necessary action would be taken accordingly…. Appropriate quarters have taken due notice of the matter….. Please allow them to examine not only the statement but its context." Though Omar already denounced the barbaric act of burning of a school bus in Kashmir few days back, the CM once again reiterated that the act was condemnable. He also said that children and education should be kept away from the politics. Omar said, "I think every right-thinking person, whether a separatist or part of the mainstream has condemned the attack on that school bus…… Children and schools should not be affected by conflicts. We believe that education should be kept out of agitations." It may be mentioned here that while addressing a rally at Bani on December 5 Sham Lal Sharma, in presence of Pradesh Congress Committee Saifuddin Soz, raised the demand of making Jammu a separate state and a Union Territory status for Leh Sharma in his speech had further said that the people of Jammu are being ignored and discriminated since many years. He also alleged that the recent reports of the Finance Commission indicated regional discrimination and disparity in the findings. |
